Thinking about putting one on....have a chunk of skeg missing. Someone told me their marine mechanic advised against it saying it would hurt performance. Any thoughts from those that have them or are knowledgeable about them? Here's an example:

Suggestions on other models/styles that work well may be helpful too.

I used the one you showed in the link for the same reason you did. Worked great. Put it on a Merc 115 and had no negative impact on performance at all.

Put one on a boat (2 - boats ago) that had 2" broken off the skeg, It worked out real well...
No real noticeable difference in performance........ Plus it was Solid.....
A lot more durable than aluminmun.

Have a local welder weld it.Less than a hundo and you should be like brand new. Skeg guards do not hurt performance just your lower unit should you hit another boulder or reef! Remember skegs are aluminum for a reason and thats to protect the motor by brakeing if impacted. If someone needs a detailed story i,ll respond.GL

what gmanny1 said. Remember the skeg protector is bolting to your aluminum skeg. So its still no stronger than it was. Now if you hit something and it breaks its goin to break higher up the sked costing a lot more to fix. I used to work for a place that fixed props and skegs and we would see this on occasion. Also welded a lot of cavitation plates from people putting hydro foils on. I say just get it fixed.

Yes,that is what happened to me on Pipestone.Only the second time I ever hit something and this was a unmarked reef. The stainless skeg guard protected my partial skeg but put all the stress on the lower unit and actually seperated the lower unit housing. You won,t see me using one again. Lucky it was last day of the trip and we limped 20 miles back to landing and new lower unit was ordered. GL.

One of our rigs gets used in a river system allot. We put a skeg replacement on the first time it was needed. After that I just filed it smooth. There's not much skeg left on it but that boat runs great. It's a tiller 50 hp so you are hanging on to the arm anyway. I would say really look it over to see if you need it. ( If I buy Do-Dads, and I have I want to see them above the water line)

My buddy snagged one of these off a rock bar on the Turtle Flambeau Flowage in May...... now I know what this was.
Looks like I got my $10 piece of metal for free.

Skegs are aluminum, because they are cast with the lower units. Has nothing to do with being sacrificial. No part of a lower unit is designed to run into a reef.
