Shep or VMS Steve or one of you guys that really know your stuff - how do I determine if my cranking battery is just dead or if the alternator or whatever charges it is not working? It's a '95 two stroke Merc 150. Thanks

put a meter on the battery that cranks the motor over it should read in the mid to low 10 volt range when cranking. anything lower you probibly need new battery. when engine is running disconnect + term on battery, engine should stay running put + meter lead on charge wire from engine and neg meter lead on battery that runs engine. should read anywhere form 13 to 14 volt range.

Does your boat have a voltmeter or an ammeter what does it read when your running, there is probably a volt meter built into your depth finder if your up around 13 volts your charging. If your charging your battery may be toast.

If your charging try to put a charge in with a charger and take the battery to your local garage for a load test. They will tell you if it's holding the charge.

Looks like jdeezay74 types faster than me

Already replaced the battery and now just wondering if that one will go downhill well. I'll try both your suggestions. Thanks guys

Okay, found the voltage reading on the GPS. At idle it's 12.2. In forward going maybe 10 mph it's 13-13.5. At speed on plane it's 13.5-14. Am I in good shape? Thanks for the education.

You charging system appears to working fine. You voltage above idle is normal.
