| don't blame me if theirs already a topic of this because i cant find much about this on google. I fish a lake with some nice sized pike. a month ago i caught a 24" 5lb pike with a 3" crankbait. i know their are some monsters their that make that fish look like a minnow. But i like throwing big baits for musky and pike. Will most pike (even if their not monsters) eat a 8" bucktail, 7" crank, 7-9" suicks, 6-8" topwaters, and bulldawgs. Because throwing those baits are more fun then catching them on bass baits. So the big question is will pike from 20"-monster sized eat musky sized baits. |

Location: Canada | I'm headed to the cottage this weekend to target the pike in the lake with my musky tackle. I catch most of them on a glider that runs deeper than most, got a couple new ones to try out (a non-soft tail version and a one off small non soft tail version). I've caught them on musky spinnerbaits and small musky cranks (tuff shads, krusher's etc.). Also going to try some bigger cranks by LML this weekend and in another couple weeks when I go back again. |

| Pike really seem to like the erratic baits, especially gliders and minnowbaits. I've caught them on straight line stuff too, but the erratic stuff really seems to trip their trigger. |

X2 Caught 7 pike last night between a 6" phantom and a 8" minnow bait, they were between 22 and 32 inches so not big fish. Quote of the night from my buddy regarding this subject, "I hate using suicks because the pike won't leave them alone!" |

| I once caught a 20" pike on a 9" Grandma. A messy situation, I tell you. But I got him back in the water alive. I've caught 30"-32"ers on 8" Believers and 7.5" Grandmas. But even going for big pike I would level off my presentations at 6". If, that is, you want good numbers. |

| I will say I've had better luck on really big pike with more straightline stuff. My biggest to date on the metro was on Super Model trolled at 5MPH. Naturally I was furious that my monster rip had white spots and green skin... Had a slightly smaller pike inhale a mag dawg on opening weekend. Hit almost took the rod out of my hands. Imagine my dismay when I saw what it was after such a monster strike...

| I have no problem catching pike on muskie baits. I dont think you can really go 'too big' either. Those things will try to eat anything that moves. Ive caught a few 40+ inch northerns usually on big jerk baits or inline spinners while muskie fishing. And i get annoyed by the small northerns that chew up my bulldawgs. |

| For those of you catching all of those "peskie and annoying" pike......how many of you are catching these after dark either casting or trolling?
Over the past 20-some years....through my readings and research...I've read and been "told" that Pike don't quite have the same nocturnal hunting capabilities and eye sight for night feeding that Muskie do. Obviously muskies feed and track a bait/prey very well at night both with their lateral line and eyesight.
Is it true that Pike aren't quite the feeders after dark that the muskies are? Or is that all just bar talk and folk-lore?
Heading north to an inland Michigan lake for some multi-species fishing again this Summer. A lake known and proven to a lot of Pike and some muskie. Would just like to find some action...anything from the panfish, bass, walleye, pike and will try too for some muskie. |

Location: Plymouth, MN | Caught 4 pike yesterday on big rubber, 2 of them were so small there was barely enough room for the hook in their mouths. They will chase anything.
There is nothing more disappointing to me than that split second when you get a nice sized fish close enough to the boat to see that its JUST a pike. |

| I spend a week on Vermilion each fall trolling 14" Jakes for musky and I have caught many pike between 28" and 40". They love the wide wobble at high speed. (5mph) |

| When I'm out targeting big pike I don't throw anything but muskie baits. My best producers for 40+ inch pike are 7.5" phantom soft-tails and Double 10's. If they're deeper I usually throw a deeper running jerkbait or a magnum bulldawg. Pike have bigger appetites then muskies (at least from what I've seen) and will take big baits year round. The trick is finding a water body that still has big pike. Most of the ones in Wisconsin seem to be full of snakes due to the "kill em all" regulations in place for most of the State. |

| I fish a small river that has some big pike in it, I throw Muskie baits and do best with 6 in phantom softail, hellhounds and shallow invaders, big game twitchers are good too. I've caught 14 in pike on double tens, 18 in on 10 in creek chubs. |

| Pike love big baits. Especially in the fall. They will eat my big sucker minnows. I usually use 6-8 inch baits for pike. But then again, I'm usually going for trophies.
Pike also love big 4 inch spoons. You can throw them all day long and not even break a sweat. Big spinnerbaits with rubber are a favorite also.

| last summer I took a new magnum bulldawg out of the package made three cast and caught a 23inch pike. That was just fine but the tail was ripped off the bulldawg in the process. I like lures that hold up. Most of my local waters are loaded with small pike. As good as bulldawgs and some other rubber baits are I tend not to use them much, just cost to much. Musky fishing is not cheap to begin with. I wish I had a picture but was fishing alone. |

| Because my closest musky waters are about an hour away, I am 'forced' to chase big pike on a local reservoir to get me my fix! I have caught small pike on huge lures and big pike on small lures... and vice versa. However, here are some things I've found so far...
When casting, they love the rubber! Especially in the fall. Working outside falling weedlines with regular dawgs has produced the best action, however, I have purchased a few gliders that will likely make their debuts this fall! I have gotten some attention using big spinnerbaits too.
When trolling, I have found that BDRs and BSRs are killer. Bigger baits will catch fish, no doubt. However, if you like to catch a lot of fish, stick to the midsize baits. I run them around 2.5 mph, which is on the slow end, but that's where those lures run best... and the fish love em.
I guess the overriding theme I have found is that when chasing pike of all sizes, stick to the smaller baits in your musky box, like 6-8" cranks, regular dawgs, spinnerbaits, etc. You will still catch the big fish with no trouble, but you will put more 'small' fish in the boat too... and after all, we all LOVE to catch fish!!!
Good luck!

Location: Stevens Point, WI | I fish with a group of gentleman who have been doing a fly-in trip with the same outfitter in Ontario for walleye and pike for the last 20 years. They swore by spoons and more traditional tackle when my brother and I first joined the group . My largest fish was caught on a weedless Silver Minnow on walleye gear with no leader and 8lb XT. It took awhile to land the fish and by the time she was expired a boat had ran to camp and back with a bigger net. The first big fish I caught in this lake was on a 14" walleye that was swallowed whole.
I have brought Musky gear the last 4 years with great success. Last year when we unloaded gear I discovered that the older, more traditional gentleman in the group all had new rod cases for their longer rods and a plug selection that unanimously included mantas, gliding raps and small buck tails. Big fish eat big prey by nature and their are many BIG northerns that are overlooked in Canadian waters that receive little and or no pressure. Hit a fly-in just right and find any warming, shallow bay with weed growth. Gator Slamming!
