I'm looking to purchase an older GPS/sonar unit for my boat that is capable of reading navionics/lakemaster chips. I would like to try to find something in the $150 range but, I'm wondering if that may be a stretch. I've seen Lowrance LCX 17 and other similar units are close to my price range. What other units do you guys recommend?

Do you plan on networking it with another unit?

Not sure what criteria you have, but I'm still running a couple Lowrance 520C's on my boat. They must be 6 years old or so. Color units with GPS and smaller (5 inch?) screens. Might be able to find some of them used for not a ton of money. I think before that the similar units were 330's or something.

If you can find it and swing it, the color screens are nice. Not totally necessary, but they make reading bottom composition changes, etc. very easy. Might be tough to find something for around 150, especially if it includes the transducer and GPS puck but I haven't been looking at used stuff in a while.

Another option if you have sonar you like is to buy a Lowrance H20 handheld unit for GPS. Not as handy but would give you gps card capability for probably around the price you're looking at.

Sorry this isn't quite in the price range stated but maybe it could be had for cheaper?

I found a 502C on craiglist for a smidge higher than your price range and you can get the lowrance handhelds for under $100, you just need to be patient. How accurate is a cell phone with the navionics app?

Thanks for the replies guys it looks like I might have to expand my price range a little. The navionics app is nice but having an actual unit for mapping is just much more convenient. I'll just keep an eye out and try to find a good deal on
something like what was stated above.

Lots of folks are selling their older LMS and LCX units as they upgrade to the newer Lowrance and HB units out now ... some good deals out there. I've picked up a GlobalMap, LCX111C, transducers, antennas, etc. for rock bottom - but piece-meal. Patience is definitely the key to finding good deals on working units.

That's a great unit, I use these LCX113s for the 2d sonar/chart stuff, and a HDS10 for 3d/weather/side scan (the new units are amazing, but you also pay for it).

The LCX units are a real a bargain for the money IMHO, and will link/network to an HDS... even network with the HDSs GPS antenna, $600-$800 is a fair price depending on the model ect, but I see that number dropping more because service/repair from Lowrance is no longer available now due to their age.

I also just figured out how to determine the hours on these Lowrance units, go to "overlay data" and drop it right on the screen. It's pretty cool to be able to log how many hours you are on the water for any giving day/trip/season.
