I have my merc hooked to a humminbird, but I can give you some advise. You need a controller to convert the yamaha information into a NMEA2000 network(not a 0183). Then you need to install a NMEA 2000 network. Then come out of the NMEA network into the unit.

Three things to buy.
1. Controller for Yamaha
2. A 3 tee NMEA network (1 for yamaha connection, 1 for unit connection, 1 for power)
3. 2 NMEA connection wires.

I am pretty sure you can't network an Elite 5 unit to a nmea network that would tie into an engine monitor. I think only the HDS series would allow that. Then you would need an interface connector that would snap into the engines output and then to the nmea network. I think one of the differences of the elite series to the HDS is the capability to network.

Yes I'm not sure about the elite, but I have a older HD5s and it can show the same data and was networkable. It has a NMEA port on it.
