Help!!!!!!
The lake me and my buddy fish often in Ludington Michigan has produced muskie that are being speared!!!!!!!!!!!! This is in no way shape or form envolved with tribal spearing! Many of the Michigan lakes that contain muskie have spearing banned to protect the resource. I attached a pic of the article that the biologist discusses where he feels the fish came from, but mentions that it is a good possiblity that the fish are reproducing because of a 14" fish that was caught and witnessed by a marina owner. The biologist also mentioned that he would be interested in stocking the lake if the spearing is banned. It is a 5000 acre lake with a ton of forage. The banning of the spearing would greatly benefit the entire ecosystem greatly if the spearing is ended. Please send an email to Tom Rozich, who is the fisheries biologist for the area, explaining how you would liked this spearing stopped. Feel free to add any info that would pertain how you would be interested in visiting the area if it were to become a esox haven. The email addy is [email protected] . If you send an email to this gentleman, could you please post a message.
Thanks a ton
Kly

Unfortunately, Jason, yes it is legal. Pike are the normal target, but some lakes have no regs protecting muskies. This has been a very hot issue in the past in other states, coming to fist fights at landings at times.

Where spearing is part of the cultural and social norm, it is not looked at the way it may be in other areas.

I think I'm going to get involved in this issue in MI. Some of our muskie lakes already have spearing bans in place, so the precedent has been set. There's hope.

The MMA is a good place to start. The MMA does a tremendous amount for michigan's fisheries. I'd say its pretty safe to say youd have the support of the MMA in getting such restrictions put into place.

You might be surprised how many MI anglers there out there that would be supporting the cause. Point me to a petition, i'll sign.

Develop a form letter addressed to local legislators outlining why it is a good idea - focus on how lakes with big musky reputations bring fishermen in from long distances (and that's sure true) and emphasize the positive economic impact on the area. Take your form letter around to bait shops and motels and ask them to join in the effort. Make them commit to sending it to legislators. Leave copies for the bait shops to hand out.

Go talk to the president of the local Chamber of Commerce, too. He/she should latch right on to the idea and ask him/her to send a letter.

Legislators respond to squeeky wheel issues - just a few letters will make them sit up and consider the idea. A little pressure from legislators will move the DNR MUCH MUCH MUCH faster than the average joe can do. This is a no brainer for the legislators, too - there are no losers in what we are asking them to do and they love that. Legislators will especially listen to the business owners.

Say, should I take a crack at drafting a letter?
