Has anyone put the 5.1 gears in the 300d? How was the performance?

I've done the opposite and it worked great. I'm sure doing it the way you describe will work, just not sure the actual performance output. I would guess that line pickup (inches per crank) would go down a couple inches so speed obviously goes down. However you'd have theoretically a smooth, less resistant (i.e. handle tens better) retrieve in a smaller package. I have 400 gears I could sell you or install for you. PM me if interested.

I just installed a set of 400D, 5.1:1 gears in my 300D and now I can bring in DCG 10 in with ease. The stocks gears in the 300D are 5.6:1 with 30 inches of line pickup, which is great for topwater or ripping rubber but I felt #8 blades was max for this reel. Now with the 400D, 5.1:1 gears I have 27 inches of line pickup but DCG 10 I can reel in with ease. I run 150yds of 80lb braid on the 300D and I love how small it feels in hand over the 400D and with the 5 bearing upgrade this reel is so smooth. The metal line Guide from the TE is on back order but that is the next upgrade I'll be doing to my Calcutta D reels.
