Subject: Lowrance HDS Gen 2 update

So I bought a new boat and rigged it with HDS Gen2 8 and 10. A software update from Lowrance came out in May, such that I don't have to buy a new chip for each. I can buy one chip (Navionics North Central, in my case) and use a generic SD card to put the same info in the other HDS Gen2 for FREE.

The problem is, my computer can't open the software update from Lowrance. Tried bith my Apple and the work HP. Can't find any issues on the internet. Has anyone else tried this? Thanks

If you bring the units in to a cabelas or bass pro , they will update them free of charge.

I recently updated mine and the instructions for transferring the update file to the SD card weren't exactly right. I downloaded the file to my computer and tried to open it thinking it was the zip file like the directions said. But then I realized it was the actual update file (.upd) and my computer wouldn't open that. So I just clicked and dragged that file to the SD card. Then I inserted that into the unit and it did the automatic update. So it could be that the file you're trying to open isn't a zip file, with the update file inside; it's actually the update file you need on the card.

if it is a zip file it shows up wherever you saved it clearly as a zip file...you unzip it and save the update onto the sd card. put the sd card into your graph and turn the graph on let it update and then it instructs you to remove the card and the unit will automatically reboot...at NO time during the reboot do you do anything to the graph...this can take up to 10 minutes to fully reboot and update. repeat for the second graph. No second chip is needed for mapping on the second graph all you need to do is have your graphs networked with an ethernet cable and one map chip will suffice.

Clint and Lookin, I combined your two answers and Voila!, it worked. Thanks again, it is so sweet to have the Navionics charts show up one both HDS's off one chip, and talking to each other! Can't wait to fish now.
