Location: Kronenwetter, WI | Well, that was exciting. Tonight I'm headed back to the landing and hit a wave and the TM deploys! Water spraying everywhere and me shouting what the $%@#! As the boat slowed to a crawl I sat there stunned, afraid to check out the damage, but happy it was still attached to the bow of the boat. Shaft splintered. Blade broken. Not sure what else.
Pay heed to that little white sticker that says you must have the collar moved all the way down and locked tight. So much for warranty coverage. Sigh. |

I have now heard of 4 different people who have had this happen. I had is happen when I was driving to a boat landing (fortunate for me nothing go damaged). Now I installed a ram mount for extra insurance.
I also know a guy who uses a short rope that he throws on every time which isn't a bad idea either.

Location: lake st clair michigan | i had the same thing happen when my fishing partner didnt lock it down all the way (partly my fault i should checked )what a scary feeling......they did warranty the shaft but i had to pay the labor 75.00 ish.... the motor was also 4 yrs old ...call your local authorized repair center ....then get yourself a ram mount like i did |

| Was going across the lake with a buddy one day when his came out of the cradle at about 64mph. I wont soon forget the POP sound that the head made when the lower end hit the water and pulled the shaft straight out of it. The head shot 5ft. up in the air and landed on the deck. As you can imagine, he was sick. |

| How does this happen? I've run mine for 4 years without incident. Is this a case were it isn't fully locked in place before you motor off? Not criticizing folks, just want to know what is causing this so I can avoid it happening to me. |

I'd like to say I'm perfect and remember verifying the green light was off, but I always pull it back until I hear and feel that audible 'click' indicating full stowage. I just don't know. |

Thanks for the warranty tip, My guy is going to do that. Got the 'ol maxxum reinstalled so at least I'm back in business for the weekend. |

My partner up front didn't lock it down correctly. (Idiot)
He was whining all weekend about it being a pain to deploy, so he cheated and didn't lock it down. We were just going across to another spot and hit 45 when it dropped down. It blew up real good.
Some other guys were fishing near us gave us a standing ovation. Lol. Parts were in stock, about $170 with shipping I think.
That's how it happens. |

Location: Hudson,WI | With having a trolling motor with a shaft longer than 48", I was advised to put a ram mount on not only for the case of accidental deployment, but with all the vibration traveling up the longer shaft motors can cause damage to the head unit. I installed Rams on the last 2 boats I've had, and I wouldn't have it any other way. |

Location: Elgin, IL | My boat has one now. Although it happened 13 years ago with a standard MinnKota bow mount, I still ask if it's locked and loaded. Its a good idea.
Like asking myself if the plug is in. Or are the straps off. Or...

Location: MN | We were on Eagle lake (Ontario) and my partner didn't lock down the trolling motor. Evidently it was hard to do. Anyway about 30 mph and it deploys. I let him drive the boat one time. He didn't have his hand on the throttle and of course couldn't find it with 60 gallons of water pouring down on our heads. Amazingly enough no damage to the motor at all. (rental at Temple Bay Lodge) Funny now but not at the time.

| I found the source of the problem a 3 year or to ago. There are 2 bolt that control the carriage for the release. These bolts are connected to the V that holds the trolling motor in place. It is this assembly that connects to the lever in the front of the terrova. I have found the issues after a buddies accidentally deployed. Take off the side covers and make sure that the screws in that assembly at the front (motor) side are tight. My buddies where loose and missing on one side. The constant pounding, and repeated stow and deploy of the trolling motor loosens these bolts. I pulled them out of my buddies goobered them up with loc tight (non removeable) and reset them. No issues since. To me it was a design flaw not to have some type of bushing on the screw with a nylon washer. SO IF YOUR MOTOR WIGGLES BACK AND FORTH MORE THAN A 3/4 - 1 1/2 INCH THAT MEANS THOSE BOLTS ARE LOOSE. Once you fix it will not be able to slide more than a 1/2 inch, or so. Do yourself a favor and take it all part and reset those bolts with loctite.

| Yes, I have to do it to a buddies terrova next weekend, I'll take pictures and post them. The screws that are under the side covers into the aluminum frame. Use loc tite, but don't over tighten, you'll rip the threads out. |

Location: Twin Cities | Ditto - I found the same issue on mine when I took it apart for some routine maintenance. I went with the loc-tite as well and has been good so far.
