What do you think of my Fat Shad baits?

I have been designing some shad crankbaits for the last 3 or 4 months. What do you guys think about them? Any suggestions? I hope to have these baits running 4 - 6 feet. This is a good depth for spring and fall here in Ohio. Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks,
Greg

They look great. How long are they?

They look great, but I'm afraid I cannot provide a reliable assessment without hands on experience. So, send one of each color to...

And I'll get back to you.

They are 4" from the front of the lure to the back.

Ranger:

Here in a month or so, I will send a few baits out for people to test. If you fish waters that you can use them in, I will be more than glad to send you one.

Thanks,
Greg

Greg,

They look good. Matches the hatch on the lakes around here (Fox Chain, Madison Chain, Pewaukee area).

I forgot to mention that I didn't completely paint the baits, i.e. the tops and the belly. Also, the baits are made out of cedar and I use a 2-part epoxy for the top coat. The hooks on the lures are a little too big. I am going to go down to 1/0 or 2/0 and see how the action is.

Thanks,
Greg

They have a good profile and about match the size of a mature threadfin or a mid range gizzard. I am curious as to what kind of a weighting you have on them. I have used some
similar shaped baits but they often had what I considered too much flotation, and consequently I retired them to the specialty box, right away. I currently have about 4 baits of this size I have picked up to experiment with does the water ever get right but notice that they are all Jap baits but one. Paint a few in old fashioned pearl. I think there would be a good market for a good small twitch minnow that could be controlled well, particularly in the springtime. How tight is the wiggle?

Those look like great baits. I especially like the idea of a squared lip. Does it give off a lot of vibration like a crane? They should be really be great baits for lakes with bluegills and shad as the forage base. 2/0 sounds like a good hook size, 1/0 would be kinda small, in my opinion.

good looking bait. are you using thru wire or screw eyes? also you may want the final coat thicker, unless the pic doesnt do it justice. if u got any questions give me a holler, I make baits as well.

Sounds good. I will definately have some at the Cave. I can't wait. I have never fished there, but my buddy has fished there before. Look forward to meeting you.

I also tinker with making wood baits, but, I always have trouble with the plastic lips. Off center and hard to keep on. Could you let me know where you got them? Those little beautys are sure to catch a river or weed edge Muskie [:p]

Zach:
I have not been able to do a lot of testing with the bait yet, just in a tank. I am going to do more testing this weekend in an indoor pool since all of the lakes here have several inches of ice. I can't wait for the Cave.

Thanks,
Greg

I believe your bait will be a great trolling bait up in the Ohio lakes. How about a deeper running bait too?
