Location: Kansas City BBQ Capitol of the world | Last week while I was talking with my Dad he told me I guess back in the 60's or 70's when they would catch Muskies on the Niagara they would fly a flag indicating that they had caught a fish. I had never heard of that but found it interesting.
I did some searches and saw that in the Salt they use them all the time with the Red triangle representing a catch over 20 pounds with the species fish flown underneath it. Also you can fly just the species flag upside down representing you released that fish of that species. Right side up means you kept it.
I think I have them rules right?
example: http://www.bluemarlin3.com/info/info-fishflags.php
Anyways, does anyone fly flags anymore in Muskie hunting? Bass Pro sells the Red Triangle but does anyone make a Muskie species flag?
I'd would get a kick showboating a Red flag with an upside down species flag out on the lake and pulling into the dock meaning I caught and released a 20 pounder. Does two Red flags represent 40 pounds, or two releases?
I want some flags and any info you can give would be appreciated.
Just have to catch a fish now.
Thanks,
Ron

| Wow, that's weird timing you got. I am in process of wrapping up a line of catch flags. When I finish them I will have them available in several colors and it will have a musky printed on it.
I have my samples at work, or I would post a photo now of what mine look like. That will have to wait till tomorrow. |

Are the similar to what I was describing with the Red being 20lbs? and then the separate Muskie flag or does the colored flag have the Muskie in it?
Since almost all Muskie guys practice catch and release I really don't see a reason to fly the species upside down to represent releasing as that's what we do anyways. A Salt thing I guess.
Interesting. Can't wait to see what you came up with. I'll check back tomorrow.

Location: Hayward, WI | I would worry about flying them due to the potential to attract following boats fishing behind the "guy that caught one." Maybe not likely to happen, and if you'd like to let people know you had success it would be fun I suppose. Not really for me but whatever floats your boat! |

| RJHYland,
My intention for the different colors was for people to choose one they like, whether its their favorite color or it matches their boat...
Because a catch flag doesn't have a strong hold in the musky fishing world I wanted to keep it simple, as most wouldn't know a color code or flag size having its own meaning, or since musky boats are relativily small compaired to the 40' ocean rigs flying several flags for several species there isn't room.
Curleytail, you hit the nail on the head it isn't for everyone. I am making these because I have a good friend who guides said he had one years ago and since lost it. He says some of his clients would get a kick out putting up the flag after a release, and the children on his boat would play with the flag and get excited to get to run the catch flag up.
Its something neat, and not for everyone. You can bet your buddy will call you when you pass him on the lake with your flag waving |

Location: Kronenwetter, WI | Neat idea, could be fun. Maybe we should all relax a bit and wave our flags. Just this Saturday we put four in the boat and when someone at the landing asked how the bite was my partner and I looked at each other and said, "pretty slow..." |

| Here is what I have. I am still playing with the "how to attach the flag" part. The one is hook and loop and the other is grommets that can be tied, zip tied... any other way.
I want to keep them simple and easily adapted to peoples boats.

Went on a salmon chater that did this once, different flag for each type of fish in the cooler. Fun stuff. |

Wow, That looks way better than I had imagined. The species really stands out with the Red. Nice work!
I would like to get one or two of them. I'm not sure how many you made but it looks like you have a winner.

| I got a few of these red ones to run through their paces. I want to make sure they will hold up to some abuse before I market them. Like my first post said the timing of this topic was almost scary with my completed samples I made.
Thanks for the kind words on my prototypes
Give me a few weeks to beat these guys up, and I will make a few extras. I will try to have White flag, black flag, blue flag and red flag. The white flag will get a black musky all other colors will be white musky |

Location: Minnesota: where it's tough to be a sportsfan! | You make them so they are also a towel and go on each pro-pole I would consider that option. Following boats is a metro deal mostly. Like Tonka just follow the blue & yellow boat....Ha Ha |

Then you can Tell them the bite was slow. Lol.

| Yes I will have them for sale, it may sound stupid but I am still playing around with size, shape, material, the different process's (there are several ways) of putting the musky on the flag (seeing which is most durable)...
I would rather not put somthing out there and hope its correct, so I am makeing sure its universal, and bullet proof. I want it to be made correctly.
It might look strait foward but like everything in life ,once you dig in deeper theres alot to consider when you are putting your name on it and offering it for sale.

Location: Home of the 2016 World Series Champion Cubs | I've got to give you credit as I have thought about this idea going on 5 years but never had the initiative to start the ball rolling. Some of my brainstorming ideasfor you here.... White flag=<30", blue flag= 30-40", green flag= 40-50", red flag =>50" Fly flag rght side up for a released fish and belly up for a kept fish. Did ya see what I did there? Consider offering a flag pole that would fit snugly in a rod holder if you can convince guys its better than flying them from their muskie rods placed in said holder or for when rods are stowed away. Be sure warning is included to not display flag on a VHF radio antena as it will impair the antena's ability to function at its greatest range.
A crazy side note.... I envisioned a product idea for a Jesus toast press that would imprint His image on your morning toast. I wont elaborate on the many angles to the premise behind this item but its rather funny if not blasphemous. But to keep it short....I saw this item next to the cash registers of the Virgin record store in New York's Times Square. $5 each. Literally laughed out loud. and of course promptly threw down $5 and bought one. |

| I like this idea. Would be sweet if there was one for tigers and pure breads as well.
We flew these in cabo after fishing striped marlin. We only caught one, but the case of Coronas convinced us to fly 4 flags.... |
