How many brakes is everyone running on these? I noticed they aren't real easy to access so thought I'd check. Throwing big cranks and hard heads mostly. Thanks.

Threw mine for the first time Sat. It comes I believe with two brakes out, at least that's what mine was. I normally run my reels with as few as possible, but noticed that I was getting quite a bit of professional over run with two. It's doable in the boat and only takes about 10 minutes but I waited till I got home and changed mine to 3 out. Will need to give it another test. I had a spool bearing added to mine to replace the bushing, so that might be adding to the lack of friction.

The factory sets them up with 3 on and 3 off
If U set them up with 3-4 brakes on then U can keep the cast control on the loose side. When guys run no spool brakes when they send me there reels for service, most of the time they need alot of work because they crank down the cast control knob so tight that it will dipple the fiber washers at both ends of the spool and the gears will then become misaliged and the reel will sound like a coffee grinder, new gears are over $20.00 to replace. Use the spool brakes !!!!!

I agree, but I like to use as few brakes as possible and still not have to tighten the cast control knob as you say. That seems to give me decent casting distance with lighter baits.

So, mine came w/ 3 brakes engaged. I just added a 4th, won't be able to test it out for a few days. I like to have enough brakes on so that I barely have to thumb the spool, hopefully 4 does the trick.

Also on the brake ring make sure it is clean and rub a little reel oil on it, when the brake ring gets dry and dirty U will hear a squeal sound from your reel.

I just got a 400d and I am a complete newbie to baitcasting reels. What amount of brakes would you suggest and how many are they supposed to come engaged with? Are they the same as the 300d's? It seems like I really have to crank down on the cast control to tune it right but I have only had cheaper reels in the past so I don't have much to compare it to. Thanks

Comes with 3 out or engaged. I tried mine with only 2 and it was not sufficient. Take Pikemaster's advice and set more brakes out if you need to in order to keep from having to tighten the cast control knob so much. Better off that way. They didn't make these brake easy to get at that's for sure. Hvae to remove the right side plate then the guts including that stupid semi circle ring, then pull the spool to get at them on the other end of the spool. If you don't feel comfortable doing this I maybe wouldn't.
