I am thinking of changing my trolling motor set up from a a 12 volt to a 24 volt. I was told that with two 12 volt batteries in series you could still charge them with a 12 volt charger by puting a trolling motor plug on the charger leads and plugging into trolling motor socket. I can see this if the batteries were in parallel but unshure this would work in series. Opinions Please

If you are using a Marinco system, it will work.

So whats a Marinco system and how does it differ from any other plug set up? Can you also explain how it is possible to charge what is esentially a 24 volt battery with a 12 volt charger?

They're not 24V batteries, just 12V in series which output 24V together. If you split the feed from a 12V charger to two 12V batteries it will be fine. Remember two 12V batteries in parallel will have a 12V output; you are doing the same thing in a sense with the charger, splitting the voltage in parallel circuits.

But by just plugging into the trolling motor plug are you not trying to put 12 volts into a24 volt system I'm still not understanding it ?

The panel wiring and plugs for a Marinco system allow for the accessing 12 volt to charge both batteries with the 12V plug, and 24 to feed your motor with the 24 volt plug. I use a 15 amp battery charger with the red 12 volt plug to charge the batteries for my 24 volt MotorGuide.

What Steve describes is correct.

Now, if you have two recepts in your boat, make sure the 24V TM is unplugged, or you'll pop breakers/blow fuses. I carry a 12V plug with jumper cables wired to it so I can jump my main battery, or someone else's if required.
