Long time lurker, mostly learning now, first time poster. Thanks for all be good info on this site, I've learned a ton.
I have an abu c3 6501 I've had for about 5 years. It is my secondary reel and I've maintained it well for the most part.

I recently took it to a bait shop for an annual cleaning. I was spooling it up today and noticed that after I stop cranking, the spool kept spinning forward.

I took the reel apart and tried to diagnose, but I'm not a mechanical genius so I figured I'd throw it out there to this well versed group.

Any ideas on what is wrong?

Also, after I stop cranking and the spool keeps going it makes a clacking noise.

If you turn the reel as fast a you can and then stop and hold the handle it is normal for the reel spool to continue to spin an produce a ratcheting noise. Mine all do that. JB

Is the push button releasing all the way? The drag set tight? Take a look at the AR bearing in the left side plate. Maybe it was greased too much.

It is perfectly normal. This is caused by the lead in cut on the pinion gear. Pull the drive side plate by undoing the 3 thumb screws and you will see what I am talking about.

Thanks for all the responses. I've had the reel for about 5+ years and never noticed this before I had my local bait shop clean, relube, etc. I had been doing that myself in the past. Any reason I wouldn't have noticed this before now if It is a normal occurrence?

I would say this is not necessarily normal. I had it happen to an older ABU Record recently, and the reason was that the pinion gear had seized on the spool shaft. Once I freed it and polished the gear and the shaft it no longer spins when you stop reeling.
