| I just saw the episode of the Larry rammsell event, and someone caught a 57", it was huge. Surprised there has not been any dicussion on it. |

| The gentleman who caught it is an active member here. An absolute giant fish. I'm sure he'll comment. Great job for sure! |

| 7 straight days of throwing a pounder, I don't take breaks, catching muskies consistently is confidence, persistence and will power -IMO, what I may lack in "skill" I overcome with effort, I have the full blown muskie passion and I strive to get better at it every day I fish (been hardcore since 2001), ...25 degree air temps (not counting wind chill), 41 degree water temps, fishing for the one, Ah nothing like late fall! I don't have much to say I was at the right place at the right time. Mike Keyes did a great job editing the gopro vid and Ed and staff @ VDL are super. Vermilion Dam lodge is a great location if you ever want to fish lake Vermilion give Ed a call. Now to get one bigger |

What an absolute monster!!!! I've rewatched that segment a least a dozen times and can only imagine what was going through your mind when you realized what you had on and the relief you must of felt when you finally did get that beast in the net. Congratulations!! |

Location: north metro, MN | Congrats Justin! I was glad I had that on the DVR because I watched that fish come up and eat probably 5 times over. Like you said man.. on to one bigger! hope your wearing your go-pro when it happens.
Here is the link. It is a pretty cool episode so I would recommend watching the entire thing, but if you don't have 30 minutes to kill skip to 9:00 minutes for the fish.

I think the answer to this can probably be expressed by the cliche':
"There are no atheists in foxholes."
Maybe "gipped" now looking back, but at the time the fish hit it didn't sound like he wanted her to fight more. LOL.
What a tremendous fish. I've watched it a couple more times and am blown away each time I see that thing hit, and for the first 30 seconds of the battle. Amazing!

| Justin;
Awesome fish!!!!
I fish solo, 95% of the time. I know how tough it is, netting big muskies, by yourself.
Of course, nothing that huge!!!!
I need to find a lighter net. The Big Kahuna sucks for a 54 year old!!!
I'm leaving for the Big V, tomorrow. Be there until the end of October!!
Your video got me more "jacked up" than I already was!!
That fish was a true world class, muskie!!!!!
Congrats!!!!! |

Location: Green Bay, WI | Good point on the net bucknuts...I've had the same thought myself. I seem to remember seeing someone on TV (maybe it was Jim Saric) using a lightweight net. Maybe it was a Beckman, although I am not sure. I'll need to research that a bit, because you're absolutely right about how heavy the Kahuna is.
It's a wrist breaker with one hand!

YUP! Outstanding...thanks! It's the "Conservation Series" net. Not a bad price on those things either. I sold my Kahuna last year, so I'll be looking at one of the new ones this year if I ever get this boat thing worked out.
Thanks for bird-dogging that out...

| That might be the best clip I've ever seen. I love videos that include the strike, and the fact that it goes from strike to net job all in plain sight makes it that much better. The size of the fish didn't hurt either. That thing was a monster.
Justin, Is that the fish in your thumbnail pic? |

| thank you all for the nice feedback. It is the head of the fish in the thumbnail. Muskie heads intrigue me, the eyes, teeth, how they get so much bigger/wider on 52"+ fish.. you can judge fish fairly well just by the head.. Having this fish on video was a trill, honestly Ive seen so much cool stuff muskie fishing.... the "video in my head" has so many unbelievable top-water strikes, boatside stuff, muskies killing ducks, on and on...I'm sure most of you do as well, wish I would have attempted to film years ago, if your not filming your musky hunts consider it - the cameras out now are fairly inexpensive and shoot good video.., hopefully I can get some more video this year. By the way the only reason I was flying solo is because my bud Steve Jonesi, ran to town that morning. Steve has been in the boat for some special fish, I know he was excited and bummed at the same time when I picked him up at the dock later that morning Late fall is a grind, we went days without even seeing fish, feeding windows can be very short...We all love fishing video's..Here was a flurry of action the day before this fish, these are the only two fish caught in 8 hrs of pounding, guess that defines a "window" : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cHYLDePwmjU

I agree with your statement about doing videos. I just started with it three years ago, and there's definitely a learning curve… but well worth it to be able to relive it. It's quite a luxury to be able to sort through frame by frame and pull a quality still like the one in your avatar. Congrats again!

I darn near pooped my pants when you set the hook and she showed herself- what a monster! My first thought after you netted her was "I hope there's someone around who can witness this!" LOL

Wow. I watched it many times and still have it on my pvr. |

|
Location: Green Bay, WI | OK, so I've watched this clip about 10 times in the past day or so. Talk about your "musky-porn"! Anyway it got me thinking about something...
Justin's fish is immense. It is truly a tremendous specimen, and I'll be extremely lucky and blessed to get a chance at a fish like that in my life--because the largest one I've ever had in the boat was still at least 2-3" shorter than Justin's fish, and was caught trolling. But at the risk of dredging up old controversies, seeing Justin's fish really makes me appreciate the size of that fish that Bob Mehsikomer missed a few years back. Was it a "world record" musky? Who knows...define "world record". LOL. But if you see the head on the fish that Bob M lost, it looks immense--especially when you see the size of the head on Justin's fish, and then see the measurement right there on camera!
There is REALLY something special about these large fish. I can't explain it, and I can't really even understand it. But it is what it is I guess. I must know several hundred musky anglers and I bet I can count on one hand the number of anglers who wouldn't hesitate to give up all other fish during a season--only to catch a fish like Justin did.

Location: Green Bay, WI | Yeah, so for the record...I don't think that fish looked much different in size than Justin's did. When I posted above I recalled the head/mouth of Bob's fish looking larger than that, quite frankly. The thing IS a big fish, no doubt about it. But watching Justin's video again, it really isn't fair for me to compare that fish to Bob's fish--because the angle of view was never the same. We never really got to see a head-on shot of Justin's fish, whereas that's pretty much ALL we saw of Bob's fish. And conversely, we never really get to see the full (undisturbed) shot of the body of Bob's fish, where we had excellent footage of Justin's fish.
So the bottom line is that it's an apples-to-oranges comparison on my part, and therefore probably not a valid one to make. We'll simply never know how big Bob's fish was because he didn't catch it. So it shall remain size-less. But thank God Justin was wearing a Go-Pro camera when he caught that fat gal, so we can all marvel at how well the whole thing went down.
Anyway, thanks again to Justin for making that footage available and to Mike Keyes for putting it in the show. It looks like it was a very successful event with great camaraderie, and I'm sorry that I couldn't attend.

| Great fish Justin. A fisherman I met at AML fishes alone most of the time and he has attached arm brackets on his net to control it better with one hand. The type of bracket you see on crutches. I saw a demonstration and one handed control was amazing. |
