Some of this may have been covered before, but I'm looking for advice on setting up for my first season of filming. Got a Hero 2....So far, I've heard get a 32GB card and extra batteries with charger in the boat. Any other suggestions? Do I need several 32GB cards? Specs looked like it only held 40 minutes of video, but I know some guys film a lot more than that. Are you rotating ten memory cards?

I filmed all season last year and used two 32 gig cards and a couple of batteries. I suppose it depends on what setting you have your gopro on. I was running 720p at 30fps. After a few hours on the water I would delete files that didn't have any good footage on them. I guess it depends on the amount of time you'll have the camera running per day too.

I run mine non-stop and have found 4 batteries and 2- 32gb sd cards cover me for most days I fish (8-10hrs). The SD cards I have hold just short of 5 hours of video, and the batteries are maybe around 2 hours each. If I spent a lot of longer days on the water I would probably need a few more batteries and another card. The best best for batteries is to go to Amazon and order some of the knockoff brand batteries. They last every bit as long as the GoPro brand batteries and are half, or less, the price. Also I have found no real noticeable drop off in video quality from the 1080 to the 720 so I film in 720 30fps just like the other poster. It will extend battery and sd card time and you won't notice any real drop off in quality.

Get the wasabi battery charger and batteries. you get 2 batteries (that last longer than original) + a charger for less money than 1 GoPro battery.

Where do I buy the set up for my head to wear the camera on my head? Besides the GoPro website... And is their any retailers that anyone knows of instead of online ordering?

Where do you buy the special fitted hat that says, "DORK" that goes with wearing that thing on your head? I'm saving up for a full-time videographer. First, I am going to learn to fish--that could take a while??

I love the footage from those Go-Pro camera deals...those things take amazing footage! I can't really comment on how a person looks while wearing one though. I mean for the most part, I'd only be wearing one on my head if I were fishing alone and wanted to document any fish I caught--and in that case then really the only person to see me wearing the thing is me, and I already know that I'm a dork. So no harm there I suppose!

Ouch! Sort of got spanked there! Really was only kidding. I know what kind of a "pro" I am based on Richard Nixon being president the last time I think I won something. Fortunately, the onset of age and memory loss lessens the pain of all that. With respect to the shirt, however, at least with Ranger--They give it to you!

Those of us that are worried about looking cool for any hot chicks encountered while fishing or at landings use the V.I.O. systems, much more low profile than gopros.

According to the Go-Pro website, the bit rate of that camera at 720p resolution is 7.5 Megabits per second (Mb/s) at 30 fps. So then if you work the math:

(7.5 Mb/sec) * (60 sec/min) = 450 Mb/min

(450 Mb/min) * (1 byte/8 bits) = 56.25 MB/min

(56.25 MB/min) * (60 min/hr) = 3375 MB/hr

So for a a 32 GB card...

(32GB/card) * (1000MB/GB) * (1 hr/3375MB) = 9.48 hours

So assuming that my math is correct, you can get about 9.5 hours of footage on a 32 GB card in 720p resolution. Obviously a 64 GB card would store about twice as much, or about 19 hours of footage at 720p. Note that their site lists a 12 Mb/sec data rate for full HD (1080p), so that means that you'll only get about about 6 hours give or take ( 9.48 * 7.5/12) on that same 32 GB card at 1080p.

So those little cameras are amazing when you think of it. I didn't see that they mentioned the codec they were using in their technical specifications on the site, but just imagine the compression ratio compared to uncompressed video!

I have the GoPro 3 Black and love it! As for the memory card the GoPro 3 has a loop function that allows you to save 5 min loops and if you didnt stop the recording it records over that... I like this a lot since it saves memory card space and editing time. if you have a follow or catch one simply stop the video and start a new one so you save that last 5 min period and start a new loop! Can also do 20 min, 1 hour and full battery lenght loop

Might be a dumb question but couldn't that be a problem?....lets say you have it set at 20 minute loops, you hook a fish at 19:30....by the time you get the fish in the bag it just started recording over the best 30 seconds of your video correct?

The loop saves the last five minutes of your interval it just starts deleting the older footage to keep the newer stuff. As long as your fish only fights for 5 min it will all be saved. I havent used my GoPro 3 with loop mode to be an expert but I havent had that issue yet. Every time an event happens I want to save (follow, catch, etc) I stop the footage and start a new loop. One for catching the fish, one for releasing the fish.

I filmed all last season with a Hero 2 and this is the way to go:
- buy 3 battery backpacks so you can switch them out and charge the extras while still filming
- you can easily get by on one 32 GB SD card
- you can erase footage on the card every so often if you don't have any action
- always record in 1080p 30fps
- you will get about 2.5-3 hrs of record time in this format with a battery backpack

I usually wear mine on my head, but it's a good idea to mix it up with some random mounts around the boat once in a while. Get some good shots of driving the boat, and even backing it in the lake. You might not think about it but it makes for a better video if you plan on putting together a DVD of the muskie season.

I have the hero 2 and its is great I was looking at the hero 3 black for the Wifi feature but after reading this thread I know Im buying it as I love the loop feature. I was always stopping my hero 2 every 5 min or so when fishing that way I only had a small clip to upload but I love the idea of the loop that is awesome and has just SOLD me on the hero 3 black.

Come on June 1st Im ready to get out there and start rollin the footage and baits.

On question on the batteries are the batteries the same for the Hero 3 as they Hero 2?

Like some have mentioned, when you are recording just start and stop the camera every so often. Like changing lures, when you have lul's in action etc.. I have no issue finding the spot where i finally do catch a fish etc..

Another thing is it is pretty easy anyway, because it isn't hard to remember where you were on the lake when you had a strike or whatever.

If you record in 720 at 30 fps you can shoot for 8-9 hours.. usually lasts 2-3 batteries as well. Just about fills up a 32 gig card as well.

Anything higher will obviously take up more space, and batteries won't last as long.

The batteries are all the same in response to handlebarz

I bought a used Go Pro from a board member over the winter. To day I was playing with it in the boat in the driveway the neighbours probably though I'd gone over the edge. I had the camera mounted on a tripod head on an old seat post about a foot above the back casting deck. The camera was set to take photos every 2 seconds in one button mode.I was trying to figure out wear to stand to get the best stills when fishing alone. The front edge of the rear casting deck appeared curved any one know the reason for this or how to correct. This dosent happen with my camera but it requires too many steps after powering on the camera to be much use to me when alone.

Get the floatation device for it. I had a brand new one using it for the second time with a head strap and the plastic piece where it mounts onto the strap broke off and it fell into the water and sunk to the bottom

Quick question on mounting - does anyone use the chest mount instead of the head one? It would seem the chest mount would be a more "stable" platform then the head. Just have heard a lot more people say they use the head mount, any reason?

We have a lot of great footage of our reels and hands during and after the hook set because of the Chest Mount. Use a head mount or mount the camera to your boat.

I use the chest mount as I don't like the head strap. But you have to watch your hands as mentioned above. Your video will have a shake to it more then the head strap. I do like the fact that the camera is facing the rod tip not where my head is facing.

I will be mounting another one to the boat facing out to the side in hopes of getting some action shots I bought the suction cup mount and floaty for it.

I also have fluorocarbon leaders made up that attach to the boat incase something happens and it falls overboard.

The hero 2 battery backpack fits on the hero 3 as dots the backpack screen for reviewing the footage that is a good thing. I thought I was going to have to buy all new batteries. One thing the new battery backpack are a sealed battery you can not change the battery in it so I'm going to look for another old style backpack.

So I got the go pro Hero2 Outdoor edition for my birthday. Is it worth returning and upgrading to one of the Hero 3s? The one my wife picked up included the wifi pack and is about $200 less than the black edition 3. I don't see much point in dropping another $200 on that one for what she got. Am I wrong? I know I need to invest in accessories and such. Also, the gopro takes SD cards, is there a limit on its capacity or specific kind of SD card in can and can't handle?

nope I'd keep it, Make sure you get class 10 SD cards. They have gone down in price (good deals on the internet) I'd get a couple 64 GB cards if you want to film a long day. (I have 3 32 GB cards that I rotate gets me through a 10 hr day) Go to Amazon and get the Wasabi batteries that come with a charger. You will want 4-6 batteries for a ten+ hour day (or at least three and charge them while you fish...I don't like messing with that). Good luck.

The ONLY reason I went with the 3 over the 2 is the looping feature. Having small clips with fish catchiing, follows, ect. makes it easier to edit video and saves memory card space.

Thanks RStein, that is the one feature I want that it doesn't have but is that worth $200? idk. I think I'll just have to get in the habit of hitting stop and start as a switch spots so its easier to delete video chunks that had no action. Can't see it being worth THAT MUCH more than the Hero2. That $200 could be spent on all the accessories I need to make this one work great for me.

Nope, definitely not worth $200! You can get a lot of memory cards for that kinda money! I went with the gopro white - didn't have a need for 1080p at 60fps, and also don't plan to use it to take stills. So many options with these cameras!

I got one over the winter and picked up a battery bacpac and two extra batteries, sounds like it should be enough, maybe just not for weekend trips. Purchased the 2ft gopole from their site, really nice construction and it floats. It will be nice for releases. Like someone else said I took two musky snaps and attached them to the backdoor with 80lb braid in case the suction fails.

I'd like to mount it over the side of my boat for fig 8 action and one deeper to record the underwater structure. Maybe have it down 8 feet with an extendable pole. Any ideas?

Is there a float I can buy for it when it is on my head just incase that fails and it falls into the water. I think I would actually go swimming if it did, but I would very much like to avoid that. But If there is somthing I would like to know where I can get it.

Also I have two 32GB memory cards that I use. How long of a video should I expect to get from one?
