Find a used calcutta 400 te or ebay a new 400d. Reels are discussed so heavily on the forum, of course you'll hear your abu fans say revos, you got your saltist fans, whatever, nothing new. be creative, all we can do for you is run you in circles between shimano and abu, and you basically cant go wrong either way, its almost unhelpful what you'll see on here.

What bigfoot said

Go to the store and handle each one. See which feels best in your hand.

I personally like the revos because they fit in my hand best.

Those who like Abu like them for the reasons they give. Those who like Shimano like them for the reasons they give. Same with Daiwa, Okuma, etc. That's why the question was asked. One cannot expect ONE answer when there are so many well made products.

I have a 400D, a Revo high speed and low speed Revo NACL high speed and low speed. SO far neither brand or any one model has really outperformed the other where a definitive 'get this reel and only this reel' answer can be offered for this section of the peanut gallery.

The Revos fit my hands nice and have great handles in the box. The Shimano feels glassy smooth and fits my hand better than most round reels.

I don't think there IS one... That said, I DO like the Revo Toro 5.3:1. It's probably the most versatile reel I own, but fishing it side by side with the winch, there's no comparison for ease of reeling double 10's. The problem with the winch is that it just doesn't pick up line fast enough to catch up with a fish that's coming right at you. I've had all sorts of reels with all sorts of gear ratios. I think your best for a reel that can do everything would be something around 5.0:1, with a big spool and a substantial power handle. The high speed reels are great for picking up slack line, but it's way too much work (and too hard on the reel) to use them for anything that pulls hard.

My dream reel would be one with a variable gear ratio. Now THAT would be slick!

With everything said a 400d is small for a round reel and has the guts to use on big baits. You may be able to find a sale and get it for around 300$.

Jerome, out of curiosity, if you have several specialty reels, why are you looking for one do-it-all type reel? Downsizing?

This is where that personal preference comes in. Decent value yes, but heavy as a tank and casts like crap compared to a "nicer' reel. In my opinion

Definitely find this to be true if you throw 10s with a 4.6:1 toro winch next to a 6.3:1
Got a Calcutta 400te, super smooth casting, pulls 10s like a champ, definitely has track record for durability...might be my favorite

I've always loved Shimano reels, they last forever and can take a bullet. They're a bit more expensive, but worth it. Abu Garcia also has a few good reels, but they don't last me as long. You certainly get what you pay for when it comes to reels.

I use my tranx hg for 10's, 8's, twitching cranks, and rubber. I am sure it would be good for jerks and gliders but I cannot work my baits fast enough.

Shimano Calcutta 400B, and if you like low profile the Shimano Curado 300E.

I have tried many different reels in the past, and keep coming back to Shimano. I don't think I will stray from them any longer.

I like the revos for comfort but the calcuttas hold up better in the long run. If you're not on the water more than 15-20 days a year I'd go with the revos for the sole fact of them fitting your hand and their comfortability. I made the switch from winch's to calcutta's for blades and big cranks due to the fact that I don't want to deal with sending reels in while the fishing season is in full swing. I still use the hs revos for dawgs, jerks and WTD top waters but I have to keep an extra one on hand @ all times due to the problems I've had with them. I'd like Shimano to come out with something between the Curado 300 and the Tranx in a high speed low-profile reel.

I'm on the water a hell of allot more than 15 to 20 days a year, and have had zero issues with my Revos. I do maintain them meticulously, as I do my Shimanos.

I keep up on my reel maintenance better than most. I'm not sponsored by Shimano so I have no personal interest in my critique. Shimanos hold up better in the guide boat. I love fishing with the revos....until the thumbar jams and I spend an hour trying to fix it while running the trolling motor trying to stay on a breakline and figure out a pattern for the day with clients in the boat. I will still tell people to buy revos because they're the beefiest low-profile reel out there without having to strap a brick (Tranx) to your rod. I wouldn't even consider a tranx a low-profile reel but it's not round so I guess it falls into that category. I'm just speaking from personal experience with the revos. If anyone else wants to chime in I'd like to hear what you have to say.

Grease the Teflon pads on the sides of the thumb bar and you won't have this problem with the revo reels.

I have one that had a flaw with the drive shaft and that has been the only problem for mine. My reels get used a ton...

On any Toro if it is a right hand reel put a dot with a marker on the thumb bar on the handle side of the thumb bar and put your thumb on the dot to push down and the bar will not jam. If it is a left hand Toro then the left side or handle side. The thumb on a 60 Toro is very wide and over time will jam if you push it down on the far side from the handle side.

Love my 60's but the thumbbar is plastic and will wear out - I have two from 2009 - I finally wore them out, but abu fixed both (replaced 3 parts) and cleaned for $25 each. thought that was a good deal, should have back today or tomorrow - hopefully they are back to near new

I have never had a thumb bar jam on my Revos, but I do tend to do exactly what PIKEMASTER suggested without the dot.

And, the thumb bar on my 400D is plastic. Just checked.

they wear out period, the fact they took 4 years of abuse from me is top notch,.. I never had one jam either? but kick lever, clutch link and lift curve, wear out eventually.. when you actually get out and muskie fish 75+ days a year for 4 years, all reels have issues. I'm sure they last longer fishing bluegills.

Anecdotal evidence is just that. And I have no skin in the game nor anything bad to say about the Toro in general. However I owned and tried two, and believe me I know where and how to depress a thumb bar, but both of mine had problems with that exact issue shortly after getting them. And with very little use on them. I understand you get a lemon now and then, I just chose not to subject myself to the issue and got rid of them after having Abu "fix" them. Same thing happened to one that I sold to a buddy. So while I'm sure many or even most may have had zero problems, they certainly weren't non-existent.

The kick lever issue has been solved since the 01 batch of the Toros. Look under the reel feet. If the last two digits are 01, or higher, the reel have the new steel armored kick lever.

The Toros are as strong as the Calcuttas, but IMO need a bit more maintenance. Due to the construction, the Revos and Toros can't flush humidity well. ABU's answer to this is, remove the spool after each trip, and let the reel dry, instead of leaving it in the boat.

There is a good reason, why a Toro or any ABU multiplier are so easily to taken into tree parts
