The only top waters I had was a couple top raiders. I tried out a fish stick hd and a weagle. I have never used a WTD in my life. The first bait I used was the fish stick after putting a split ring on and after 3-4 casts I had the cadence down and it was awsome.
I put a #5 split ring on the weagle and it was diving more than the side to side. I put a larger split ring on and got the cadence down immediately. Awsome bait. The lake I was on has only had fish stocked since 08 but I had a small fish follow the weagle in.
I was using a ti 8'xh with a curado 300e using diagonal taps on the rod to make the wtd's come to life.
I have horrible rhythm but I found it easy to work those wtd's. If I can do it anyone can.

It should only get easier and there aren't too many things that beat the sight of a big ol' ball of water behind those surface lures. Timing your hooksets on these kind of lures is alot of fun also.
