| Can I get some advice on oil for Optimax? Does a guy buy the Mercury oil that runs about $36-$40 a gallon or buy an off brand like Shell, Valvoline or even Cabelas at $13- $15 a gallon? All are TCW3 as per Mercury manual. If I buy the "cheap" oil I can buy a muskie lure everytime I add a gallon? |

If you can do it, I'd split the cost a bit and go for Amsoil... Synthetic so it doesn't smoke a bunch, runs clean in the engine, and you usually can find it under $30 a gallon if you go with a local independent seller.

Location: Kronenwetter, WI | So....okay...I keep hearing about everyone running amsoil.....I'm running xd-30 in my evinrude ficht and paying about the same as a gallon of amsoil (35$). Since amsoil is 100% synthetic, am I better off running that at the same price? |

| Ok lets take this one set further. I am also running XD30 in my johnson and merc kicker, if I make the switch to Amsoil can it be mixed in with the remaining XD30 with my next fill up? Say 5-8 gallons of old premix XD30 (left in the tank) and 15 new gallons of premix Amsoil. |

Location: Duluth, MN | I ran out of oil up in Canada one musky opener (dumb me forgot the extra gallon)
and had to mix a jug of quicksilver oil in with a few quarts of amsoil. No issues other than I could notice the smoke and smell of the quicksilver oil. Filled her back up with AMSOIL after I got home, and no issues.
For all practical purposes oil is oil, it all should burn. How efficiently and cleanly, thats another matter altogether. |

What I would suggest is to run the tank down as far as you are comfortable doing, then fill up with amsoil on your next fuel fill. The oils are compatible, so it will not be any sort of issue at all whatsoever.
And most definitely run it in your kickers!! If you do any sort of trolling with a 2 stroke carbed kicker, you will truly enjoy the lack of smoke and smell..especially if you are backtrolling into the wind.
The HP injector is perfect for premix, and those oil injected systems. To be honest, I am unsure of the high pressure direct injected systems for HP injector (they might be calling it just HP) now, but a little research through amsoil will get you to the right product.

| I'm glad VMS brought up the independent dealer for the AMSoil.. That's all I've used in any of the 2 strokes I've had.. Never had an issue and I think it smells and smokes less than the Manufacturers brand stuff.
Just paid $42 a gallon for the AMS 2 weeks ago.. Called one of the independent dealers yesterday, and was told $30-$32.. |

Location: Duluth, MN | Yep way cheaper from the independant dealers. My brother is one and I can get a 4 gallon case of HP injector from him for about a $120. Pretty reasonable for a seasons worth the oil! |

Location: Angola, IN | There are a lot of really good 2-stroke oils out there. Red Line, Motul, and Maxima to name a few...all of which are rated much higher than Amsoil. I know Amsoil has a huge following in North Woods....but I wanted to chime in here with 2-stroke oils that people trust in their ultra-high performance 2-stroke engines. People with $20k-$50k in a 2-stroke engine either run Red Line or Maxima oils. These are mechanics who tear these engines apart after every race and can see week-to-week how much better these oils protect versus other products.

Torco makes some of the best oils out there as well. I've never used their 2-stroke oil, but here is a link to their PWC offering:

Location: Eastern Ontario | None of the outboard manufactures make their own oil it's packaged for them by an OIL company. Before retiring I worked for a large cheese manufacturer / processor and did a lot of private label business for Restaurant and Food chains and when switching from one to the next the only thing that changed was the packaging |

Location: Hayward, WI | You can tell just by looking at the inside of the prop on an Optimax if they are running a cheap oil. The only oils that I have seen that will not have the prop sooted up, that I have seen, are Optimax oil and Amsoil. There may be more but those are the 2 that I have seen. These also seem to help with a longer spark plug life, which can get expensive at $16-19 each for spark plugs. |
