Been waiting a month and a half for these 5 rods! Come home and find this!
3rd time USPS has broken my rods... Out 2 muskie rods and 3 spinning rods for at least another month and a half.... what a bummer... the packing was a 4" 3000# crush pvc tube that was smashed to pieces.... luckily they were insured

Thank god they taped the crushed hole. And they wonder why they're losing money against all their competition.

I hope you were able to open that tube in front of the driver!

Just how does one crush pvc piping like that???? On the other hand, they taped it up nicely for you. Man that just sucks.

the driver talked with my wife and was in shock as my wife grilled him about what had happened, all he could say was sorry! Ya pretty crazy that they straight up shattered 3000# crush pvc. The biggest rod in the tube a 8'3 xh 2-8oz rod was snapped clean in half...

As far as insurance, the rod builder said USPS broke a tube with one rod in it and within 5 days had the insurance refund check in his mailbox so i hope it goes smoothly, if not i am screwed and will be looking for a new rod

Bummer ! Good thing you had insurance.

Incidents like that aren't limited to the USPS though. I bought a new St. Croix LT and had it shipped (from Minocqua to Hayward) via SpeeDee and 8 days later it showed up in pretty rough shape. Next time I'll just drive over and pick it up...

Man that really sucks! You have to wonder how that type of thing happens?

I've had both FedEx and USPS break rods on me... But I think USPS is the worst, great for small packages, but I get nervous sending anything in a long tube.

Had to been done by a forklift. We work with schedule40 pvc all the time. I couldn't break that tube like that if I ran it over with my service truck. Maybe if I hit it with a sledge hammer when it was below zero .
Good luck

I'm hoping it gets all straightened out and you're good to go by opener.

Good luck on USPS insurance!!! They STINK on honoring it.

In short, I had the post master general write me a letter from the Netherlands one time confirming my $389 shipment did NOT get to that country. The USPS said it was delivered and the USPS system even said it was not delivered. That was the 9th reply I got from the USPS over a 9 month battle. After that I took over $30,000 in shipments and found another shipper for most of my USPS. If you need to ship a rod ship it with FedEx. They still break things but they will honor their insurance. I have had many issue with UPS too. Over $16.11 claim they lost over $30K in rod shipments per year to FedEx about 3 years ago.

Here are my two suggestions:
SpeeDees for MidWest
FedEx for all others

USPS and UPS have a lot to prove to me...

And they wonder why they just can't compete. I cringe everytime i order something online and the shipping says "USPS". Its either going to take 3 times as long to get or it will arrived damaged.

Not sure if it's good news, but "postdanmark" (the Danish version of USPS) really stinks too, when they break things it's a pain in the but to get the insurance money and they have no idea how to keep track on the "track and trace number" :/

While I am not defending the USPS in any way shape or form I am not sure how much we can draw from a single occurence on a shipment to Denmark to a domestic shimpment...

either with way it totally stinks...good luck with everything...

Unfortunately my season is year round here in uta, , I actually scored my first tiger 2 weeks, so I will be down a rod.
Just a crappy situation overall, I will see what pans out

Granted you have more experience than I, but as mentioned above SpeeDee (affectionately known as "SloMo" in my house) has damaged rods shipped to me in the past.

I guess shipping rods safely is just beyond reasonable expectations these days...

USPS broke a CD I bought. In a jewel case, shipped in a bubble pack. A CD will flex but they got it done anyway!

Ive never had issues with broken good or packages, but I have had similar problems as James. I dont even bother paying extra to insure a package going out of the country anymore. On two different occasions I have had USPS tell me that its not their problem because they delivered it to Canada, and Canada says they never received the package.

I have found Spee-de delivery to be the best when it comes to rod shipments. They do not go everywhere, but if they are available in your area use them. Good people.

I wasn't even talking about overseas shipments, i was referring to packages inside DK, they lost 2 of mine within a week last year.

Did you pack the rod or did somebody else ?

I'm sure that if my rod had been packed in the manner the original poster showed (plastic tube) it probably would have been OK but that wasn't the case. Oh well...

I've had safe deliveries from Spee-de whether I packed them in a heavy card board tube or PVC tubing. I have been on both the sending end and the receiving end without damage. I can only relate based upon my experiences using them.

LOL I have a LOT of other domestic examples too For me its comes down to customer service and USPS and UPS have ZERO once it comes to insurance. I love my carriers and local USPS employees! We buy them Christmas presents every year. Its the insurance and inner workings of the USPS I cringe when dealing with ...

I'm only speaking of my experience as well. It was enough to have me make the drive to Minocqua (or Park Falls) next time around. Glad they worked for you though.

I still think shipping companies tend to be "shipping challenged" for anything that isn't in a 3D rectangular container. Examples of this theory are everywhere.

Off topic, but I hate getting things shipped via fed ex smart post or ups smart post. Fed ex or ups ships it and usps delivers it. More people that touches something the more likely it will get damaged plus it takes forever.

Ive spent time in many of the USPS's BMCs (Bulk Mail Centers) throughout the country and this is not surprising as the majority of the system is based on conveyors for your normal sized packages. The rods and tubes are definitely handled by hand from container to container and my guess is that this happened when they were unloading it from one of the semi's after if it had been cold out making the PVC brittle to the point where it would crack like that. The containers they use to sort these packages are about 6 feet high and a larger rod rub is probably placed in these at an angle, with the top portion sticking out (no different that sticking out of a pickup truck). Very easy to get snagged on and hit during transport. Proceed with caution.

I thought usps had lenght limitations of like 7' or less and if it was longer you had to pay an arm and a leg to go through them.

I just cant believe that you would ship with them again after they broke your rods 2 other times. It still sucks and good luck with insurance.
