| I see many people with all sorts of ideas on leader lengths. For me it really depends on the lure. Some lures just work better with short leaders or light leaders. Big ball bearing swivels can really effect glidebaits and cause all sorts of presentation problems. Snaps are also a hot subject. Should they be used or not and if so...which ones.
This might be a great topic for those wintertime tackle tuners that are getting ready for the next season.
So whats the latest scoop on leader length, ball bearing size and snaps?

| I have less experience than many, but here's my two cents....
My suicks death-wobble best on a fairly heavy poundage (90#?) Sevenstrand at about 10". My Undertaker works like a dream, but only on a farly thin single strand (40#?) leader at about 12". I'm switching to 80# floro for everything else next year, the leaders will be about 14" to 20" (because that's how long I saw Extreme Mike's at Cass!). I've switched to the small Stringese snaps for everything, and good ball bearing swivles, too. I put small Bucher rings on the eye of many cranks and Suicks to help ensure consistent action.
Can't wait to see if the floro makes a big difference on the ultra-clear waters I sometimes thrash.

| Jason,
I'm going to try no snaps this year on my leaders, just tie a loop and conect to a split ring.
As far as lengths, that all depends on how or what I'm fishing.

| Whether the leader be short, tall, twisted or bent, follow the leader to where you are sent! There are many qualities that make up a leader, as history has so clearly shown us. Leaders come in all shapes and sizes, w/ many different accompanying dispositions; some are natural born leaders, others are thrust into the role for different reasons. Whatever the reason, a leader is to be respected until he/she can no longer be the leader they once were, or percieved to be by themselves or their peers. To be a leader requires abilities that the common folk can look up to, admire, cherish, contemplate, relish, wane to be, etc... [::)] | |

| I think Jesse Ventura was a average leader at best. | |

| I thing the Sponge was saying "the bigger the mouth, the, bigger the leader". Sponge in the past helped me tie my own leaders. Now I have found stainless steel leader you can tie without crimping! Yup just tie to the lure at any lenghth. Although I still crimp. fishermansfactoryoutlet.com has this in 50 lb. test from fenwick.[;)] | |

| I've been thinking about this leader question and realized this is my biggest tackle headache. I like to throw my own version of a jackpot alot and the leader is constantly catching a hook. Also if I use too heavy of a leader or barrel swivel it will pull the nose of the lure down or sink fast on each glide and slow the action! When it becomes too frustrating I fix it by removing the leader which is not good for muskie fishing. A longer stiff steel leader helps but the longer the leader the more uncomfortable casting becomes. | |
