I just interviewed for a job yesterday in La Crosse, WI. I am from SE WI and have never spent much time around La Crosse. Are there places to fish muskies around there? Maybe on the MN side too, but still relatively close? Any input appreciated!

Contact Jordan Weeks from the WDNR as he is the area fisheries manager. He loves to chat about muskies and will give you the low down on all that areas muskies opportunities.

Not many muskies in the LaCrosse area. The Mississippi River has tons of Walleye Northern Pike, Bass and panfish. The Black River has muskies a little further north Melrose area to Black River Falls. This is a shallow river navigated easier with a flatbottom river boat.

Lake Neshonoc, east of LaCrosse was stocked a few years ago with muskie but not a very large population of them in there yet.

The good news is that you are within a very short drive north to excellent muskie waters in Jackson, Eau Claire, Chippewa Counties and further north.

Good advice to contact Jordan Weeks at DNR. LaCrosse also has a Muskies Inc. Club known as the Gods Country Chapter. I am sure they would be very helpful.

Not musky fishing but the trout fishing in the SW area of the state is supposed to be outstanding. Look up stories on trout fishing in the "driftless area". Some of those streams are open year round to c&r fishing.
