Subject: why do we need muskies?

figured that title would get people's attention-

sorry i haven't participated on the board much lately- but i could use some help from fellow muskiefirst members-

i have been encouraged by fellow fishermen in my muskie-less state of connecticut to approach the head DEP fisheries manager/biologist with a proposal to introduce muskies and tiger muskies into one or more of our lakes or flowages...

10 years ago- people in connecticut didn't know what walleyes or pike were- but since- they both have been introduced by the state into various waters, and now we have thriving pike and walleye populations and fisheries in over a dozen and a half lakes- and anglers are thrilled about it...

i think that there is a great opportunity here for creating a muskie fishery in one or more of our lakes or flowages- and i am told (by people who have dealt with him) that our head DEP fisheries manager is very progressive, open-minded, and would probably give consideration to the idea- but i really want to present a convincing proposal if i am going to make the effort... in other words- i want to cover all the bases before i approach him (environmental impact, impact on forage and already-present gamefish, socio-economic impact, etc.) i.e.- why do we need them, other than to help satisfy my insatiable muskie-fishing appetite? []

so- i ask the members here who have followed this board very closely- are there any threads (or articles/websites/ etc.) containing good information, or convincing arguements, as to how and why the introduction of muskies to a new lake or region is beneficial? certainly, there are a lot of considerations involved with the introduction of a non-native (and somewhat "controversial") gamefish...

i remember reading a thread a long while back about kentucky's cave run muskies- where people were defending the idea of muskie stocking against pan-fishermen who thought muskies were "eating" their crappies- some muskie fishermen posted, and tried to explain how muskies are beneficial to a lake and fishery- and even an asset to the region's economy- i'd like to read through these ideas and other thoughts on the subject... i will search for that cave run thread- but if there were any more threads in the last 6 months or so, that are in the same vain- i'd appreciate if someone could point me to them...

or if you are bored- go ahead and post some reasons why it could be beneficial to introduce muskies to a new region/lake- i'd appreciate any information that i can get-

tight lines!

Hey Zach, how are you?

I think you can get a lot of help from the NJ chapter of Muskies Inc. as they just did exacly that some 10+ years ago.

Whatever you do try and get info from MN and Ont as well as they were really successfull. [:sun:]
