my boat is currently at the installer installing my new HDS Gen 2 touch and I want to network it to my existing HDS 7. I just got a call from the installers saying that he thinks that an extra box is needed to do this. It was my impression that all you needed was an ethernet cord can anyone help me here? do I need extra equipment? if the answer is no like I think I may be taking my boat elsewhere.

What information do you want the units to share? If its just sonar and waypoints between the two units, then that is shared by ethernet and no you will not need a box. The Gen 2 touch has two ethernet ports, so if you want to share structure scan, you plug the transducer into ethernet port one on the touch, then link the units using ethernet port 2, If you are linking more then one unit, or adding more accessories that require ethernet (such as sirius weather) then yes you would need an expansion port.

That is exactly what I was looking for, thanks! I am just looking to share Sonar and Waypoints between these 2 units.

When I got a free moment I also called Lowrance and they reiterated what you mentioned, that all I needed was the ethernet cable part number (0127-29).

I didn't know that the Structure Scan ran off of ethernet, nor was I aware that the touch had 2 ethernet ports. Either way, the people I was dealing with did not instill any confidence in their abilities.

Just for my knowledge:
Is the expansion port you mentioned the same as the "box" you talked about needing if you wanted to share more than just waypoints and Sonar? Also, this may be a dumb question, but what can you share besides Sonar and Waypoints?

Yes.

Over ethernet, you can also share sirium satelitte weather and radio as well as radar. If you set up the NMEA backbone you can share all sorts of extra information for your boat.
