I would love to drop a couple grand and get one that has side imaging but its not in the cards. Can someone give me some models of either hummingbird or lowrance units that I can do down imaging and gps with lake maps and what not. 300 dollar range is all I can really do but interested up to the 500 dollar range.

Thanks in advance

The Elite 5 DSI is as low as $379 now.

The new Elite 7 can be found for $539.

X2

I just picked up an elite 5 DSI for $400 shipped to my door on ebay. Literally just got it an hour ago. So I can't say exactly how good/bad it is. Everything I have researched says it's a good unit. It is DSI only though, so you wont get a 2 dimensional feature with it.

Anyone have much use with the hummingbird 386ci DI combo? Is that sort of the hummingbird equivalent to the Elite 5 DSI?

i would look at the elite 7, you'll end up wanting a bigger screen, i just went the the hbird 858c HD with DI. but thats out of your price range. reason i went with the Hbird 858 is the potential ipilot link in the future....

I hate to say it because I love my Lowrances, but in this price range, Humminbird's got it with units that do DI and sonar. DI is not a replacement for sonar. You WILL miss it if you only get DI.

Lowrance has some nice small combos out this year for $400! Elite 4- DSI is $350 @. BPS. That gives you GPS and DSI, you can't beat that. There just might be one of those on my bow this year.

The Humminbird 858c and Elite 7 are comparable units in terms of features, the Elite is cheaper. Although Humminbird has the i-link and Lakemaster capabilities Lowrance doesn't. I personally like the display and menus of the Lowrance better so that is what I went with. Either way, search Xtreme Navigation - and check prices, they're the best I've seen.

I put a lot of thought into that before I bought my units. I picked up an elite 4 for the back of the boat (14' tiller). And the elite 5 DSI for the front.

When I cast for muskie, I'm in the front of the boat, and really don't need sonar at all, I just want to be able to follow contour lines. That's why i went with a DSI only unit on the front. But if i do need regular 2D (vertical jigging walleye), I have it on the back. I have less than $800 into both of my units, and figure I'm extremely well equipped.
