I do alot of fishing out of state so I fly to most places via Air Travel with my rods in a PLANO Rod tube, now here is the problem TSA and Customs when I travel to Canada will open most rod tubes to ck out whats inside of the Rod Tube and when they put back the rods they will bend alot of the rods eyes off, so I was wondering if I had Bob from JUST ENCASE make me a clear plastic rod case if it would keep TSA from opening the rod tube ???? your thoughts !!!

PS: Have Gun will Travel was my favorite Western, Paladin who was the first to wear all black, sorry Johny Cash, also Gene Roddenberry was one of the lead writers for that show before he did Star Trek.

That IS a good idea! I've always just left the good rods at home when travelling. Aftter seeing how they handle luggage and cargo, I won't fly with anything I care to see in one piece ever again.

Pike Matser: Do you check your rod tube as luggage, or carry it onto the plane and stow in overhead storage?

Have you considered shipping the rods w/ Fed ex or UPS etc.? ive done it with golf clubs and ski equipment - big bulky stuff. It makes airport life much less of a hassle.

If you know someone in Canada buy a couple rods and leave them there then all you have to do is pack your reels. Mabey a stupid idea but just a thought.

Maybe put some slicks on the rods and the idiots may not bend them up as easily when they put them back in. Some people have no respect for other people's stuff...

Use your 2 piece rods and carry them on. I travel with 2 piece rods for saltwater and my 4 piece fly rods and just carry them on, no issues. BR

I know some people that fish Canada quite a bit each year and they have rods that they leave up there so they don't have to deal with customs.

I used to fly in all the time with rods. This has been an issue for along time. I finally went to putting the rods in bundles. Eyelet over eyelet, tip to butt cable tied at both ends. Everything was visible and they quit breaking them. I have a few of the Plano rod tubes that they have managed to break. I went to a PVC pipe, one solid piece. I can only imagine how bad it is today. I was running in the '80's & 90's.

The operative question is, "Paladin, Palidin, where do you roam?" It's entirely a function of what kind the guys are at the TSA drop-off. They are as different as my first wife from the present in wanting me to be a happy person. I try really, really hard to explain that the rods are really fragile...will they PLEASE let me be present cuz they are going to take them out of the case. I once had guys in Atlanta invite me into their private area to talk about the tournament I had just fished, and once had guys in Milwaukee so rotten that they may have been rough on purpose. Three rods were broken that time around. I would use Speedy or some delivery service that is used to rods..or I would beg, beg, beg the TSA folks to let you in on the process. Think of them as you would a conservation officer, some are as nice as the day is long...some think they are there to represent Satan!

Hey I was not saying that TSA damage rods for fun but when they put them back in they will accidentley damage the rods. I will hold back to make sure if they have to open them I will help them. But U can't always be there to assist them. TSI are for the most Great Guys and Gals, just don't p**s them off.

A few years back when TSA was going completely nuts I had a customer bring in 3 G. Loomis rods that they cut in half with a hack saw looking for contraband hidden in the blank. Needless to say the customer was furious as he was on his way to a fishing destination. TSA did pay him to replace the rods but ruined his trip.

There is sort of one kind of silver lining in this if all the rods don't break and the trip is not ruined. If they are rods from a quality company like St. Croix or Loomis, after your insurance company pays you the full $300 plus retail claim, you will still have the broken pieces. Those pieces and 50-100 bucks per rod (depending) will get you brand new sticks. So, you get (say) a thousand bucks, spend three hundred, have three new sticks and seven hundred for your trouble. And, YES, I did tell the insurance about the program, offer them the pieces, but they were quite happy to allow it. Like they say, just cuz life gives you lemons doesn't mean you can't make lemonade!

What are the best options for 2 piece rods? I'm going to be in this situation the next couple of years and would like to pick up a couple of them. Looks like TI has some that run a little less than $150 each. Any others out there I should consider?

I have a Shimano rod that is two piece but it separates near the handle instead in the middle, so it still doesn't save much travel length.
