I have the most success in the heat of the summer when I am burning double 10s. The big debate is what reel should a guy use. Obviously the low gear reels turn easily but then it is tough to get the speed. I have swapped out my revo winch gears for 5.4 on one reel and 6.4 on the other which is much better but I still wish I had more speed.

The best answer seems to be a Tranx but it is $500 plus tax and shipping you are closer to $600.

I read a post that a guy likes the Diawa Saltist STTLW20H-C. It brings in 35" of line per turn which is one of the highest I have seen so it should be very fast. It looks rugged and has a large power handle.

Does anyone out there have any feedback on this particular reel?

Thanks

Used it last season with no problems. Take the clutch spring out if you buy one.

Thats all I use for bucktails. I took the clutch spring out for a while, but ended up putting it back in. I wouldn't worry about it. The reel is very fast and smooth with a good drag. Seems like it backlashes more than other reels. Might take a little practice.

I have been using mine for 2-3 years now and like them. They are big whne comparing to what you are currently using but get the job done. The 30's and 40's are huge on the Saltist. The 20's work just fine. It does seem to backlash more off the bat until you get use to them and play with them some more.

I agree about the backlash issue, but it's only an adjustment for a few casts when switching rods. I wouldn't let it sway you from buying it.

I love the Saltist. I use both the 20 and 30's. They are stronger than any other reel i have tried. The 30 is a bit big but I still like it. I use them for double 10 on up plus Mag and Pounder dawgs. Keep checking the buy/sell board,I have picked up a couple and gotten great deals on them...

I have saltist 20 and its an alright reel but if you try to burn dbl 10's you will still get tired quickly. its still a little bulky to palm after awhile and it is a little tricky at first to get use to so you dont backlash so much. also I seen pikemaster posted once a magnetic attachment you can put on the side of the reel and to adjust the clutch or something.

I have used the Saltist 20 for the past 2 seasons for dbl 10's. It works well for bringing them in at a fast clip. I don't know about burning all day but it moves em good and fast with a standard retrieve. I will say, as others have , they backlash alot. Especially when casting into wind or casting a bit too hard. I got so tired of the backlashing, (at prime times and spots) that I sent mine to Hatteras Jacks in Carolina for the addition of a Magnetic spool brake. (about $60) I was dissapointed in the results, so I have purchased a Tranx. Since I fish alot, and love bucks in windy situations, to me- It will be worth the $400 I spent for the New Tranx.

I have no problems burning bucktails with mine.I have also had zero problems with backlashes, don't know what they are doing or I am doing right. I do set the tension knob a bit tighter, seems to work for me. If you are not concerned with the size then move up to a 30,bigger and badder than the 20,it's bigger brother...

I've been using a Saltist 30 for about 2 years. I use it for bucktails and big, hard-pulling crankbaits. It takes a day or two to get used to but it's a nice reel. I just wish it was a bit smaller. As far as burning bucktails, it makes it pretty easy.

The Saltist has no Spool Brakes so they will backlash alot, here are a few tips don't over fill the spool keep the line as tight as can on the reel and use a rod with a soft tip XH not a XXH or any rod that that has a very fast tip for the action.

I have a 20, been using it for 2.5 years with no problems. It is fairly heavy but compact so for me it is comfortable to palm all day.

I had initial problems with backlashing but took some line off and now it casts just fine. I have it spooled probably 2/3 or 3/4 full so the line pickup is down into the upper 20's or 30 ipt range. There are faster reels but I like the saltist because it is affordable and has been reliable. The big handle makes pulling blades all day no problem. I use mine for big baits like big doubles, big rubber, 10" phantoms, etc.

I don't want to get into a peeing match,BUT... I am refering to the Saltist LW20/30 HA. There IS tension control on it,they call it a cast control knob,( that is from the pamphlet that came with the reel...) It works just like any other reel that has a control knob on the side of the reel.

Yah mine is the LW20HA too. The knob your talking about is the tension control however you have to tighten it up alot to not get backlashes and when you adjust it you have to move it very very little. Thats what the magnetic spool brake add on was supposed to help with but I personally havent used one yet.

The cast control knob is designed to control overrun at the end of the cast. Brakes on the spo, which it doesn't have, are designed to control overrun at the beginning and during the cast. I prefer to have the cast control knob set as lightly as possible on most all my reels to not offset the spool shaft to one side. Brakes help accomodate that.

Most reels are made for casting and will have spool brakes which are on the spool, most have 6 plastic pins that you turn on or off the Satist was made for deep sea jigging and has no Spool Brakes, it only has a Cast Control knob on the right side of the reel to tighten down to slow down the spool when casting, but don't tighten it down to tight because it has fiber washers that will dipple and the spool will then be off center and the reel will sound like a coffee grinder because the gears will be out of alignment. The New Saltist in Black has Auto Clutch so U don't have to flip the lever anymore and that spring that always breaks the New satists don't have that system. Now if they only installed spool brakes.
