Location: minocqua, wi. | most of us tend to get excited for late ice and tip-downs for crappies and/or jigging for perch and bluegills. this year there is so much ice and unfortunately now snow and slush but keep in mind there are some great deep-water jigging options in N. Wisco for Cisco and Whitefish. i'd always wanted to do it and finally went. we fished 3 days this past week over 60-80' of water and although the bite was fineky we were able to score some nice fish. i'm told it only gets better so hoping to get a mess to smoke. a good start so-far.
we've fished lightweight line (4# fluoro tied to 2-way swivels) and glow jigs tipped with wax worms.
we've also caught incidental lakers that of-coures have to be put back down the hole, but not until you've enjoyed a great fight!! |

| Sounds like fun. I sure do love to eat whitefish. Have you ever tried them fried or grilled? Delicious both ways I think. I had a friend recently grill some skinless on a piece of aluminum foil with nothing more than some salt and pepper on the fillets, and man was that good. |

Location: minocqua, wi. | i made the mistake and thought i'd posted this in the ice forum but thanks for the response! the fish we caught i just gutted for smoking but hoped to hear they would be just as good baked or fried, so i'll try some that way for sure. i'm not great at getting up at o'dark thirty but found you have to be there for first light.

Location: Sawyer County, WI | Fresh cisco fillets are pretty great too. Just a little salt and pepper and saute them in a bit of olive oil. I can see why musky love them ! |

Location: Elgin, IL | Fresh whitefish or ciscoes are the best. Made a number of ways, I like to grill em with onions and butter. Mesquite chips tip it in. They are awesome as long as they are fresh.
Nice work. |

| Sled, are these the same as the whitefish from the great lakes? That is one thing I miss about not living in the U.P.. We had one of the last active Lake Superior fish houses two blocks from my office and they brought in fresh whitefish on a regular basis. Just loved it. Would grill on high heat, skin side down on piece of oiled foil, brush with melted butter, a little lemon juice and a dash of paprika. If these are the same, I will have to go after some when I retire to Rhinelander. |

Location: minocqua, wi. | they are the same ... the daily bag limit is 25#. i'm not sure if you could fill a limit based on the bite we've had so-far but i'm told it gets better and better to the end of late ice. key is to be on the ice early so it's 4-5am. wake-up call and set-up well before sunrise. the fish we've caught are 14" - 18" ...
i thought i'd put this on the icefishing forum so my apologies (it is better than watching people throw baits in a swimming pool). if any of you are ice-fishermen make a point to register on the icefishing forums. a small but good bunch in there building better and better each year now and there is also a buy/sell/trade forum too. |

| If we join you in the icefishing forums, can we talk about spearing without people getting all upset and stuff? |

| Thanks Sled, happy you posted to the wrong forum. I love whitefish and so does everyone in my family. One more reason to look forward to retiring in the Rhinelander area. |

Location: minocqua, wi. | we can do that in the basement ... cooler heads down there. we've got fibs, libs, radicals, homers, kids, trollers, conservative grumpy old men and the occasional drive-by thin-skinned tough guys who can jab at each other with a bit more respect ... usually.
