Location: MN | Looking for your opinion on the most iconic or recognizable places on bodies of water that you have been fishing or boating. For example, Lake Mendota in Madison, you can see the capital and downtown skyline from the water. You can vote for multiple locations and add your own. Thanks! |

Several days of fishing here with light tackle might give you a different perspective of muskie fishing....

But maybe there really are alot better places to fish than Wisconsin.
At a very reasonable price.
And yes, you can troll here.

It's fun, but no comparison to the challenge of the Muskie. Catching is great, but all you do is reel the fish in. The guide does the rest. |

Hi Justin, my Captain and good friend Ramone share the same thought regarding catch and release. This was our third Stripey of the day, and the largest at 9ft. and 155 lbs. As you can see, it's hanging over the gunwale at least a foot each side....Ramone does not make alot of money, and it's his boat, so when he told me he was going to keep it and sell the fresh meat to the marina area eateries I understood. He has bills, and mouths to feed. They live alot differently down there....some won't understand. Again, it's not my boat. He's the owner and Captain. And a great friend.
Fishing that water from a 20 ft. panga on light tackle is incredible. From small game Roosters and Sierra's to Marlin and Mahi, it's unreal. A 45 minute battle with a Stripey is good, although the fly fishing thing has my attention. They are also fishing them from kayaks.... |

Hire a saltwater guide. Pay the money. They take you to the fish. Troll or throw where they tell you. Catch a big fish. Instant gratification.
Don't get me wrong; it's definitely fun and those fish pull a lot harder than the Muskie. Lets face it though, your not the captain taking your boat out on the Baja and finding the fish. There are numerous species available and something large is always biting out there depending on the season. Muskie fishing doesn't compare at all. You don't have a clue! |

Location: minocqua, wi. | Fishboy ... when we fish on Roatan it's a boat owned by a friend of a friend. the big guy in the pic is my friend and the other guy in the pic is his buddy with the boat. it's an all-out team effort first looking for the dark blue/purple water then scanning for breaking/feeding tuna feeding on the surface. the guy who owns the boat is driving it and my buddy and i are setting lines hoping to get a tuna. once you get a tuna it's a frenzy to get it rigged onto a live harness before they die. if you don't work fast and get it into the water you are toast. once in the water one straps the other guy with a rod-holder and then hurries to clear the other lines. it's about 10 minutes and there is a wahoo on ... then it comes to landing with the gaf which is a blast. wahoo are notorious for getting unhooked so no guarantees. good ones are 4 footers and very different than muskies. teeth and power that never lets up ... rigged lighter than what we use with no break-offs.
if there are no live tuna to be had you have to filet and rig the dead ones onto your trolling rigs and hope for a marlin hit ...
i'll agree that wreck and bottom fishing with a guide would be boring, but not what and how we do the trolling fishing.
Roatan is Iconic and can't wait to get back down there which should be hopefully soon.
as for a Musky Icon lodge = Andy Meyers Lodge ... yah, i'm a homer when it comes to the AML Experience. it's better than what folks say. some of those guys winter in Panama and go do what i'm describing and more. |

Regardless of all your technique. Don't compare it to Muskie fishing or a Wisconsin location. Unrelated to the thread, enjoy your chicken of the sea. |

Didn't say it wasn't fun and well aware most saltwater fish fight harder than muskies. I've done some of it and watched the rest on TV. It's great but not really comparable to the Muskie hunt or the challenge of catching a 50" in my eyes. Midwest/homer mentality I guess.
No saltwater and Roatan are not iconic in Wisconsin or anywhere close making it unrelated to this thread.
Eagle icon=Three Bears in the distance.
My Wisconsin icon,Lac Vieux Desert=Valley of the Giants. It all began on the Big Chip though in 1984. Beautiful place. |

"Don't compare it to muskie fishing"
I will always compare fishing destinations and techniques. I've been fortunate to fish many, and I've enjoyed all of them one way or another. I have been lucky.
Smallie or bull bluegill fishing with a flyrod, Mahi fishing in Chub Cay, or huge pike fishing on Great Slave, it doesn't matter. For me, muskie fishing isn't the beat all, end all. They all have their space with me, and some I really enjoy more than others. And I will continue to open a beer, sit by the fire and compare them any way I'd like. That's the fun of it all.
Heck, I've been known to throw out a jig and minnow for big walleyes while on one of my fall muskie trips in Vilas..
I guess I just don't have that midwest homer muskie elitist mentality. I'm Ok with it too.
