Location: New Jersey | Wanted to see if anyone had as guess to how big this fish is. It was only my 5th musky and she gave me a lot of trouble in the net, so by the time I snipped the hooks I was more concerned about getting her back safely than getting a measure. It's a Jersey fish.

Location: Lake "y" cause lake"x" got over fished | I could be way off but to me it looks like it is pushing 50" maybe 49ish...". Beautiful fish, nice girth on her too. Congrats man.
it is not to far away from his body, and you can tell by how small his fingers look that the fish has some good size to her. I don't know exactly, but id say 50+

I'm 6'1" tall, 210 lbs. and can easily palm a basketball. I was by myself, so the photo was taken by propping my camera on my cooler on the front of the boat and setting the time. The photo was taken about 10 feet away, but I cropped it.
Thanks for the feedback and the congrats everyone. |

Count how many hand widths you get for the length of the fish and call that L.
Solve for X where X=L * W.
Then solve for Y where Y=50-X.
Then solve for Z where Z=Y+X and that will be the length of your fish....congratulations! |

Location: New Jersey | Honestly, I think it was 50. I had caught a mid-40 on the Allegheny River a couple months prior and there was absolutely no comparison. The main reason people tell me they don't think it was a 50 is because of the head. My buddy was out this summer and they landed a 48-incher (that they measured) and the picture he sent me was taken from about the same distance. I actually took a piece of string and ran it down the back of the fish they caught (in the picture) and then ran it down the back of my fish (in the picture) and just the string was an inch longer. Not sure what that translates into actual inches, but it made me confident enough that this fish was 50 inches.

Using this formula, it's no less than 50 and no more than 51. |

Location: Northern IL | A great looking fish with a nice girth, congrats! Greenwood? However, with its small head and flawless body this indicates a younger fish. I'd guess 45" maybe 46", 27lbs tops. Not trying to rip on you but what's up with the spinning reel and the small pliers? By beefing up our equipment and practice, we become more efficient at landing. When your next biggie comes you'll be ready. Nice picture and one you may never forget!
Have you met Jeff Loy yet? A fun guy, knowledgable and one of the very best in the NJ/ NY area! |

Location: New Jersey | I had been musky fishing for less than a year when I caught this fish. The reason for the spinning real was that I had read that some anglers scale down their gear throw very small baits in the early Spring. I've learned a lot since then and would never use a spinning reel to cast for muskies, but even at that the fish was caught with the casting set-up sitting next to me. I did have a set of small pliers with me, but I also had a hook-out and the hooks ended up needing to be snipped anyway. |

| Spinning reels are fine and have purpose in muskie fishing. I have a dedicated creature/jig rod that is rigged spinning all the time. Creatures/jigs were killer on greenwood for me. I never fished the lake you caught this one on, but it is good to see the muskies are doing well there. BR |

| The head threw me, but I'd go 50 after hearing all the other comments. This sure has stirred up a lot of discussion about your catch. I recall my first years and how exciting it was, and to get such a nice fish is a great feat. Enjoy this fish and memory of it all. She was a nice one. Have a great 2013.
I don't remember many things, but I have distinct memories of lures, fish, where and what I was doing at the time I caught fish. I can imagine this has been a very motivating and memorable fish for you over the past months. I congratulate you on releasing her healthy, above your desire to get a measurement.

Thank you very much. I shall surely never forget this fish. I didn't even own a boat last year, so I was fishing off a rental boat with no trolling motor. The water temp was 36 degrees and it was crazy windy that day. I wanted to fish the shallows, but since it was such a warm winter they were still choked with weeds. I found a good looking spot on my Navionics App on my phone, motored to the North end of a weedline and let the wind blow me down the weedline. I had to start the outboard a couple times to pull me back off the weedline, but after about 10 minutes I felt the fish on. She barely even fought. It took me a minute to get her free, but she eventually swam off and I stuck around to make sure she didn't come back up. I'm really looking forward to 2013, my first year with my own boat. I already landed an incredibly fat 39 in January, but that was on a walleye jig so I guess it doesn't count. |

| Your story behind the fish is great! I remember my 14' aluminum. I hacked the seats out with a sawzall and put in a plywood floor. I had a bowmount trolling motor rigged to the front somehow and bombed around in my 25 Evinrude tiller. Likely very illegal, but I was free and casting skis. The nicest fish we put in that boat was a solid 44. I got into an old Tuffy and had 10 good years with it. Now I'm in a Mirro Dual Impact and didn't put a fish in it last year, but we tubed with the kids an awful lot.
Good chatting, and lucky you to be getting out on the water in winter. We have another two rounds of snow coming this week in WI, and no thaw in sight, except it has to sometime, gee I hope. |

Location: Minnesota. | Hello Mark,
I certainly don't know for sure how long she is and I don't care really, much against many of our ilk here. I've taken a few measured 50's and only one nearly as thick as that one.
Anyway, you have one wonderfully healthy, well-colored fish here and if I took anything close to the beauty of that one I'd be talking and showing forever!!
Healthy. Thick. Colorful and a super specimen!
If it still matters I'd give you a full 50 inches b/c a fish that thick belies it's length...if that da*mn length thing is so special. I really don't care and I'm betting you're still on Cloud 9!
One of the best looking fish I've ever seen.
