Location: northern indiana | I'm not a guide but I just have a question for those of you who are. So a random guy hires you to take him out for the day to learn the area and hopefully put a fish in the bag. If he is by himself and you have plenty of room have you ever brought a buddy along? I understand more people equals more lines and different baits in the water to see what they are moving on that day. I just want to know your input on a situation like this. Thanks |

| Yep, never done it and never would ... Just having 1 other stick in the boat feels a little more like fun fishing and not guide fishing. As strange as that sounds, there is a different feel to having just 1 other guy instead of 2 in the boat. |

Once I get the clients set and fishing properly I will cast, not full on as if I were fishing alone, but I do fish. |

Location: Eastern Ontario | I asume this must have happened to wallydiven and I know if it happened to me I would be mad.Although I have never hired a guide I wonder how the guides feel about the guy that hires them for a day or a half day then fishes their spots for the rest of the week. I had considered becoming a guide but decided I did not want to be forced to fish with someone I would rather throw overboard.

| I did a family trip about 10 years ago where we hired a guide up on Rainy for walleyes. The day of the trip the guide bowed out and had two of his "buddies" take us out on the lake. We got no discount on the rate. Needless to say, we haven't given him business since. Not quite the same as what you are asking, but I can say from a customer standpoint that such a move would not make me happy. |

| I had this happen once the guide brought his friend. He said he was good luck he put the friend in the front the guide in the middle and i was in the back. As it turns out i was the only one to catch a fish all day. It still makes me mad to this day i should have said something but it was the frist guide i went with. |

If any guide shows up with a "good luck charm" he better be ready to either leave the guy on shore or pay me back my deposit.
I'm also blown away by the fact that you hired the guide and he puts you at the rear of the boat with he and his "charm" in front of you - unbelievable !

Location: Ontario | I would never bring a freind along but, once I had 1 client that ask to spit the day with another person if I could find someone for him. They don't know each other but it worked out fine and they now fish with me together as freinds. As for fishing with the client, if the fish are doing something different as in biting a fast figure 8 or pulsing the blades I need to be able to relay this to my clients. The only way I can notice this is from fishing. I fish with other guides a lot. I catch more fish with guides that fish then the guys that sit and watch. I just don't get the indepth instruction that a guide needs to be telling me.

Location: Pewaukee, Wisconsin | Guides are hired to teach clients all aspects of the sport. No where does a third person help in any way. One on one is the best a guide and client can have for the most out of a trip.
Having two or three clients in the boat is just fine as long as both clients and guide pay attention to everything going on.
I guide from the back of my boat and watch everything that is going on in front of me. My electronics are there for all to watch. My instructions are heard by all because no one is behind me. If three clients are casting one is standing next to me(the least experianced client).
If only one client is in the boat I will make sure he/she is doing everything perfect every cast before I pick up a rod. I will not start to fish unless asked. If I get action on my rod I switch rods with the client so they have the hot bait. If I hook a fish, I hand it off asap. It's all about the clients and learning.
Even on a hand off the clients get to practice and learn as I talk them through the do's and dont's of fighting a fish. I also can show them the best netting practices, propper fish holding for pictures if wanted and release tips.
In my ride the only way an extra person would be added by me is if we were trolling the great lakes and wanted 3 extra lines for my client. Also SHE would be a smoking hot first mate net girl. Nine lines and some good eye candy could make a client very happy. Been there done that. But that's an Extreme example. |

Location: syracuse indiana | no way in my boat. the clients are paying for my service, not for me to entertain a friend on their money.. that just plain stupid and very bad for business.. plain and simple. as for some of the other questions myself i run the boat. from the back at all times.(have a long footpad) even if im byself im there. just used to it. now if a client does want to fish back there thats fine too. and i usually start them out and i sometimes fish and somes i dont.. but amost all my clients always ask me to fish too...bill

The last could cost alot in the long run though. |

Location: Minocqua, WI | I agree on the single client comment. Fishing with one guy can be a lot of fun. However, even with only one client I have only fished when the client asks me to. When I do fish along with clients, it is always a handoff situation if I hook up. In my opinion, nothing makes a guide look bad like a client telling the story of how he had to net the guide's fish. The one exception is ice fishing where showing trumps telling in most cases and you have to stay mobile to keep on fish (jigging). Even then, yield the hot hole to your nearest client when you find it and try to find the next one so you can keep them on fish.
Same with duck hunting. If the situation allows, my gun is with and loaded but clients get first crack. I will shoot along with but its usually in the capacity of cleaning up cripples. I have heard some horror stories about many hunting and fishing trips gone awry. I dont ever want to be "that guide".
The biggest complaint i have heard from clients about other guides is "ya we did ok but the guide had the personality of a rock" or "ya, we did ok but the guide was very arrogant/condescending"
If you treat your clients like equals and make an effort to "teach not preach" you will go much farther than most based on that alone.

Location: Blaine, MN | scheduled a 2 day guide trip a few years back...diff. guide each day. 2nd day the guide fished from the front of the boat, when I called him on it, he stated that it was the only place he could run the boat and see the electronics so thats how it had to be...He caught 2 fish that day, Me... not so much. That didn't even top day 1. |

| Well I have fished with several guides never had them bring a pal but I have always had a partner with me. Not to say some of stuff that goes on hasn't rubbed me wrong. Had the guide that as soon as we pulled up to spot ran to the front dropped the trolling motor and fished out of front all day. My 1 st guide. Others I still wonder about. Some caught fish with some not some repeated others nope |

| First of all...I don't belong on that list... second, trust me you don't want to fish with two guides; unless you wanna hear a bunch of crazy stories and some serious smack talk! Wait that might be kinda fun...not really the same as "guiding" though.

Just get a guide who treats it as a profession not a paid hobby and you'll be fine. |

Location: sneaking out to get on the water ;-) | I think you'd be crazy to never try fishing with a guide, granted I'm no pro. I learned a ton from fishing with Bob Benson and how else can you show up to new waters with limited time and know you are on fish right away. Not only that but I have an early 60s 14'er so vermillion wouldn't be so nice. I asked questions about situations that didn't come up while with him but I wasn't sure about. Just like anything you will have your bad along with your good. Do a little research first, it's not hard to get info on different waters and guides. There's always something knew to learn for all of us, if you think you already know all their is to know all the better for those of us still willing to learn. Look for a reputable guide and enjoy your trip you might take something knew away. |

Every guide I've ever been out with has been exceptional. I believe the horror stories you've read above are the exception rather than the rule. Odds are that if you hire a true pro, you will get one. |

Location: Hudson,WI | I've had the great fortune to fish with some very well known guides, and I've had nothing but positive experiences with both of them. They taught me a lot, and if they had action on a particular bait they had me put it on as to increas my chances.
However the first time I fished with one of them, he asked me if I wanted him to fish, and I was shocked that their are clients that wouldn't want the guide to fish.
Lastly I'm not saying their's anything wrong with reeling in a guides fish, but I couldn't do it, and still feel good about it. It wouldn't really feel like I caught it

| I have been on St. Clair and the Larry where it is easier for the guide to have a first mate or rod guy. He set the baits the way the guide wants them, handles the netting, he doesn't catch any fish and you get more rods. Casting is a different story.
my 2 cents.

That's a good point, but he said, "that some people don't want the guide to fish because they think it decreases their chances of catching fish." |

| I've never had a guide ask to "bring a friend".. The day would be over, nobody would get paid, and I'd ask for my deposit back. As for fishing in the front of the boat? Never seen a guide do that, either. Bad move dude. That's what you call subsidizing someone elses fishing. Guides fishing? When it's just me, I welcome it. Two baits in the water = figuring out a pattern twice as fast. 3 in the boat? Well... Go ahead and fish if you want to. We're not leaving you anything to cast at, though, so don't expect much action. In that case, I figure anything the guide catches is a fish we would never have seen otherwise. 3rd bait through...
I have had guides try to "partner me up" with someone else so we could split the cost for the day, and save me a few hundred bucks. But that's only fun when it's someone you know, or someone you wind up liking. If it's someone who gets a lot of backlashes, likes to cast across your line, in front of the boat when they are in the middle, or can't cast for #*#*, I'd rather be alone in the boat.

Although I would find it rather fun to fish in between say Paul Klein and Howie Meyer! Heck I would even gladly give up the front and middle of the boat, and fish from the back. I may not even fish at all. Too much would be missed if I was fishing.
