Location: tHe LaKe Of PrIoR, mN | I recently picked up a boat with the ram ball and socket mounts on the boat they are the style that screwed to the deck, not the clamp on rail style... 4 in total I searched the forums and it seems most that are using the ram style are using the flush mount style where the rod holder drops in from what ive seen
How many of you have used these I plan on dragging suckers in the fall and maybe try some trolling cranks Just figure i would ask since the mounts are on the boat already

Location: tHe LaKe Of PrIoR, mN | so i should only use these for suckers and walleye trolling then... I just hate the fact the boat has rails why didn't the previous owner not use rail mount rod holders... I did see most were using folbe and down easters some ram but just didn't notice any say the ball and socket style
I was hoping someone who has used these would chime in

Location: Madison, WI | I had them on my last boat and hated them. No firm hold on the rod and definitely not strong enough for muskie trolling. Went to rail mounted Scotty's and love them. If you only drag suckers they'll be fine but i wouldn't even troll walleye with them. |

I have 4 on my boat and LOVE them, EXCEPT for musky trolling. They work awesome for lighter trolling for walleyes, or for dragging suckers, as long as you have it set so the fish can take line out with a sucker. The infinite amount of adjustments make them better most all other holders for these uses. If/when I do musky troll I use salities. |

Yes, I wasn't sure how familiar you might be with sucker fishing. |

The only reason for the questions about the holders never had a boat that was able to troll from |

Location: Walker, MN | I have two Ram holders and two Folbes on my boat. I wish I had four Folbes. As mentioned they are not strong enough for Muskie trolling and they even slip when I troll boards and crankbaits for Walleyes. They are great for Sucker fishing or Walleye/panfish holders though.

Location: SE, WI. | I've used the rams for years. Most guys have it right. They will slip trolling with any speed, and baits that have some drag. I boated about 1500 ski's on my rams. finally got tired of the slippage. BUT, what I did was drilled a hole through the aluminum post, and stuck a spring pin through the hole. This helped big time, and really helped the problem. If you were to ask guys like Doug Johnson, he loves his rams, and will tell you the slight give , helps when fish hit.
I never thought I was in jeopardy of losing a rod by the ram rod holders. Also, I had the rail mounts. I use both down east, and folbe now. I've had Folbes also wear after about 2 years. I also had down east fail on me, but I run rods down in the water2-4ft. Supposedly, folbe is working on a saltwater holder that hopefully will hold up to all our needs, but the price??? Is anybody's guess! |

I would assume if the holder twists a bit its almost a hook setting motion if the holder doesn't spin on the ball mount, after searching the forums I know that doug uses the other lock in style ram mounts |
