Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Jig and a plastic worm. Yes, I was fishing muskies. It was a good one, don't remember exactly how long but I had biggest in camp for a week of fishing. I think I was in my teens, 16 maybe. Fishing with my Dad, Tony Portincaso, Jimmy Cairnes, and the Rockford/Chicago contingent on a Fall outing on Bone Lake. What a rush.
I miss those guys some. Hope to see my Dad in April. |

| First musky was on little green and chartreuse Rapala DT-6 while bass fishing. It was a whopper at 17" long. Two weeks later I caught it's twin on a different lake, same little crankbait. First musky while musky fishing was a 28" caught on a custom painted Crane bait. Orange tiger. My wife caught a fish on the same spot the very next day with that little bait. |

| Summer of 1982 up on a lake in Michigan. Annual Family Reunion, same lake for 12 years through the years of 1980 through 1992. I knew Muskie and Pike were in the lake, I had seen the pictures and heard the stories. I immediately knew I wanted in on the action. After two years of that week-long family reunion trips in a row, finally, cut my teeth on Pike and Muskie fishing all in that same week that year in '82. Got my first Pike, a 29 incher casting a traditional red/white Daredevil spoon. Later that week, got a low 30s Muskie on a chart/silver J-13 Rapala. Have had the infectious illness ever since... |

That's how I felt. It was fun catching unlimited panfish but the 3-4 hrs a day of scaling and filleting was miserable for a kid! I haven't been in about 13 years but if I went back I would target muskies. |

| All of a sudden I feel really old. 1958. Mudpuppy. Pfleuger skillcast. We were anchored and eating lunch. My Dad had just said, "Put that #*^@ thing back in the boat and eat a sandwich, there ain't enough water here to hold a fish" , when a 42 incher hung itself on the lure as I attempted to lift it out of the water. I remember it like it was yesterday! I had experienced dozens of bites prior to that one, but this was my first hook up!

A few hours. later *POW* I caught my first Muskie.

Caught a few more on Waconia using the 2" shadling trolling for walleyes in the early 90's
The fish that got me started muskie fishing was caught on waconia casting to shore while my friends boat had stalled. Hooked it in about 1' of water using the shadling and 6# test, 38" muskie begining of November.
The first muskie I caught on purpose was while trolling a Bionic bucktail, it was a 48" giant and I did not have a camera with me. I released it. Took me two more years to catch another as big and get a photo so I could get a replica made. |

| First hooked? Or first brought to the boat? My first hooked struck a 5" jointed, knock off minnow lure in loud firetiger. It hit--to my complete surprise--while I was casting from the bank of a creek near where it joins the Allegheny River. It broke the line after a ten minute tussle. First boated came a long time thereafter on a jointed 8" Depthraider in, of all things, chart. pikie. Never was I so glad to see a fish. At least it confirmed that they existed--I was starting to wonder, though the first hooked had shown itself on a rocket-like leap out of the water as soon as it felt the hooks. The second fish was a long time coming too. |

Location: Sycamore, IL | Creek Chub Pikie jointed minnow: Early 80's, I was maybe 8 or 9 years old, my dad took me up to Century Lodge on Eagle Lake. We got an "indian" guide, (Stanley Gardener) to take us around and after catching what seemed like hundreds of hammer handle pike we asked him if he knew where to catch a muskie. He took us to the first spot and handed my dad a globe and said "cast" while pointing at a submerged boulder. The water exploded as a "huge" muskie jumped clear out of the water, but missed the bait. After a few more casts we motored across the bay to another submerged boulder in a bit deeper water. The guide handed my dad a Creek Chub and told him where to cast. On the second cast my dad hooked into his first musky, a 42". We kept that fish and had it mounted- makes me smile every time I see that mount. After that fish my dad asked me if I wanted to cast the Creek Chub. I casted that bait for the next three days and caught my first muskie (a 28"? tiger) on the last day of our trip. I've had the fever ever since...

Location: Not far enough north! | First fish for me was a real challange. Was the summer of 96. Worked for the IDNR and fished some strip mine lakes every night after work with my cousin. First we'd get some gills for catfish bait then bass fish till dark and cat fish till about midnight. Well one evening while throwing a Manns deep diver for bass I had a big fish grab the lure right at boatside turn its head cut the 10lb mono and swin into the depths. I instantly started shaking and hit my knees on the floor of the boat. Cousin says what happened? I said musky, Big Musky! We sat there for a few minutes and believe it or not the fish shook the lure and it came floating up... Got her two weeks later (August 11 only fish date I remember to this day) fifty yards from original sighting on the same rod, line, lure but after that first time we both had leaders on everynight whenever we hit that area of shoreline. We hand landed her actually got good measurements and had a poloroid camera in the boat then released her. It was a 48" Tiger. We had no idea what we had and never thought about keeping her but with good measurements it creamed the state record and would still have it today... Took me 13 Years to beat that fish for length (Pure) but I doubt I will ever get a bigger tiger that that one. Been Cursed ever since... |

It was 48.75 inches long and I caught it on February 5th 2009 at 3:30 on a snowy afternoon while fishing by myself. Man! I can still see that big silver flash when she hit...
Catching that fish has had a big impact on how I have spent most of my free time since.

| Fishing for panfish with my 9 year old daughter on her birthday. Hooked a low 20's musky on a jig/leech that was soaking off the back of the boat. As a kid, first reel I ever bought with my own money was a Mitchell 300. I found an old Mitchell 300 at a rummage sale last summer (along with a $2 whippy old rod) and the fish put up quite a fight on that rig. My daughter was hollering and whooping it up. It's twin was swimming along with it checking out the action.
I caught more fish on that rod/reel last summer than all my other gear combined.

Location: Marshfield, WI | First was on a walleye minnow and was 15". First on a musky bait was a black and silver Mepps. It followed another guys bait in, we all figure-eighted and it went under the boat. The other two kept casting and I kept figure-8ing. Fish came back and grabbed it. Fish was maybe 30". |

1991, 17 years old...Day Lake, WI Bigger size Buchertail blk/nickle, still have the bait -whopper 30" Unforgettable though..its just girls were even more important then- lol Didn't really get crazy about muskies until 1997.
My first was also at age 17 on Day Lake. Summer of '93. I was twitching a straight Rapala minnowbait (red/gold belly) by the nearest the bog edge from the campground. 34" drilled it. It really was an awesome, amazing experience and I don't think a day has gone by ever since that I haven't spent some time daydreaming about muskie fishing! |

| My first Muskie was a 43 in. caught down by Steelton, Pa. in the Susquehanna River early morning , first light, fishing with a friend for Muskies, I made the first cast while he was getting a lure on, shortly after lure hit the water the J-13 Rapala perch color was hit. At first I thought I was stuck then the line went up river and then I knew what I had |

| First muskie was 34" on Canyon Lake in Ontario, on a brown/white Tek-Neek in I think 1997. I remember it swung and missed the Tek-Neek halfway back on a cast and being so pist the fish missed it and my buddy said, "throw it back over there it might hit again." I thought, no way, but did it anyway and twitched it for maybe three feet and the fish crushed it. Ended up catching 16 muskies that week and I've been screwed ever since.

| Around 1986 got my first musky with my brother. It was a 27'' tiger I got on a castmaster spoon fishing for trout! It fought like crazy and ran through our legs as I fought it! I was yelling so loud my dad came down from the van because he thought I was hurt! I still have the bent treble hook from the lure! My next musky and first pure, was about 1993 when I was 15. It was a beautiful 31.5'' PA musky that crushed a homemade silver/white bucktail! |

| 6 lb. mono, hook, sinker, and a fathead minnow. Mine was an incidental catch while fishing for walleyes on opening weekend of walleye season on the Mississippi River. I was reeling in a rock bass that got absolutely crushed and luckily I managed to land the fish. Didn't get a measurement on the fish but easily 45"+. It took me another 4 years until I actually started targeting muskies. |

| A red and white hula popper from a small aluminum boat with my brother and father and six-horse motor. It was 32 inches and took many minutes to land with the spincast reel and 10-pound line. Bass fishing on Wildcat Lake near Boulder Junction.
That musky changed my life, leading me to a new passion, eventually leading to a book, and a new home near musky waters.
If I hadn't caught that fish, my life would have gone some other direction.

| ugg...a horrible memory
34" hit a all black 10" suick a couple feet from the boat and proceded to jump in the boat (old aluminum lund) and completely freakout with that 10" suick whipping all around totally tangling everything in sight until the fish was totally wrapped up.
when i finally got everything settled down the fish was as dead as a nail. tossed it back and sat in awe. then a bald eagle came down and scooped it right out of the water and flew away with it.
i still carry that 10" suick with me but have never thrown it again. |

| Trolling with a Little Cleo silver on Yellow for pike, when I was 10, and my brother who was 16. It was just us two in the boat. I had the fish to the boat a couple of times and didn't have a net. There was a Walleye fishermen near by watching the whole thing happen. My brother shouted out if they had a net. They did, and a came over to help.
They came over and older gentlemen jumped into our 12 ft boat and landed the fish. I wish I had a picture of that fish, but it was the early 80's and we were kids.
I will remember my first fish, and the kindness of older gentlemen helping me out!
Just remember when you see a couple of kids out in smaller boat, and they are having trouble with a fish, don't stand by and watch, shout out if they need any help. Who knows, that kid you helped, could be the next Bucher, Gelb or Heiting. |

Location: Morgantown, WV | I caught my first muskie recently on a baby cowgirl!
This was probably my fourth time out fishing for muskie. I was fishing a local river early, casting with a storm flat stick. I saw a big fin protrude from some shallow water behind where I was fishing. I thought it might have been a carp, but I made a cast in that direction and got my first follow from a nice muskie. I tried to do a figure eight but in hind sight it was probably terrible. I'll need to practice that for sure.
I made many more casts in the vicinity of the follow. Since my lure was getting fouled with weeds I switched lures--baby cow girl in black and nickel.
I made many more casts and was about to move on. I said "One more cast." Casting farther than I wanted put me in a very shallow area. I thought I'd get snagged in the weeds so I started reeling as fast as I could as soon as the lure hit the water.
About halfway back to the canoe, this fish blew my baby cowgirl up! When I set the hook, the fish immediately went air born! The fish seemed enormous! After a short but intense fight, I managed to net it myself without incident. Luckily there was another fisherman nearby who was able to take a photo for me before I released the fish. I'll never forget this experience--I'm definitely hooked on muskie fishing!

I did not fish for Musky at the time but he has since gotten me hooked. i initially refused to Musky fish and would always target other species out the back of the boat while he targeted musky. however, it all changed when saw him pull up an absolute silverback gorrilla on a hawg wobbler. After seeing that fish I started buying musky gear as soon as we got home from that trip and have not stopped since..... |

| First muskie I caught was on a small floating rapala going for trout. I remember thinking it was an odd looking pickerel then I figured it out. It was about 16" long. The first one I caught targeting them was 33" on a Mepps musky killer. |

| All of 28", Lake Wingra, 9/2/2004, trolling (yes, I said trolling, on a 300 acre lake...) in someone else's boat. Don't know the lure. Least memorable fish to date. I reeled it in. Whoopdee#*#*. (I'll never forget the first one I hooked in about 1985) |

| 1993 on Indian Lake in Ontario. Throwing a fire tiger Bill Lewis rattle trap. My dad and Grandpa had anchored and we're slip bobber fishing walleyes. This muskie follows to the boat and I had no clue what a figure 8 was so I just let the lure sit there and the fish takes off. Make another cast, fish comes in and I just leave the bait hang in the water while the Muskie stares at it. Give it a couple jigs and POW, game on. Think I was using a 6'6" Quantum Snapshot rod with a Shimano FX 200 and 8 lb test. Probably was a low 30" fish. Never got a measure or a pic, wish I would have, just popped it off at the side of the boat. I'll never forget it! |

| It was a jointed, hard plastic bait called a Bulldog in a smallmouth pattern. I was trolling Lake St Clair in Anchor Bay and running the bait on a down rod with 6 feet of line out at the back of the boat. She was 42". In 12 hours fishing over 2 days, we had 11 strikes and landed 7 muskies ranging from 35" to 48". We all thought catching muskies was easy.......... |

| Black and Orange B-Flat. 39". But, that wasn't the one that changed my fishing life, it was my first "encounter" using a Johnson Silver Minnow in perch color. I think I was 13. My second encounter was with a Jimmy Houston Helicopter lure on a bright blue-bird day after I'd just took a swim in the bay. |

Best part was my grandfather catching one the same day. We kept them to eat back then, so I have a great picture of me and my grandfather holding the fish in his front yard. Defiantly my most memorable day muskie fishing. And I still have the muskie Killer!!!!!

| I think it was 1987. My first boat, a tiny 12 ft. row boat with a 6hp Johnson. A med-hvy. spinning rod and reel with 14 lb. Trilene. Michigan still had there tiger stocking program going and a small lake near where I lived was known for putting out some big fish. The lake was actually an old mine pit about 90 acres in size but probably 200 feet deep. I was trolling an orange and black Salmon Slammer spoon and caught a 28 and 34 incher. Michigans size limit was 30 inches and I killed and ate that 34 incher. I have a couple of blurry photos of that fish. I was new to the area and later found out that it was illegal to use gas motors on that lake. |

Location: tamahawk,wi-elmwood pk,il | The Johnson silver minnow was what I got my first musky on over 40 years ago and i was fishing for muskies. The Johnson Silver Minnow with a pork frog or a twister tail is a much over looked bait. You can work this bait in just about the thickest weeds or timber you can find. I still use it when I need it today. I would have to put this bait in the top 10 for many species for the test of time. The Old School still pays off ! |

Location: Germantown, WI | My first musky was caught on a wooden Creek Chub Pikie Minnow using 12lb line and spinning gear. The lure had been passed down from my grandfather and was probably purchased in the late 1940s. It was probably 28-30" which was a legal musky in that part of Ontario at the time. It was the one and only musky I have ever kept and I vowed then that I would never keep another one barring a true trophy. Now that there are reproduction mounts, I don't see myself ever keeping one unless I have a true hawg that dies after all attempts to release are made. Sad to say, but sometimes it happens even to the best musky fishers out there, |

| 1987 up on Sweeney Lake in Oneida Cty, WI. It was our first "full year" of fishing Musky. Was with my Dad and Grandpa, and hadn't seen anything. I got frustrated and said "Im going bass fishing." I took off my Mepps Musky Killer, and put on a Foxy Jig. Remember those old commercials where the little Foxy Jig used to tease "neener, neener neener, you caaaaan't get me!"...and then the largemouth bass would come unglued and engulf it. Well, my Dad and Grandpa started making fun of me with that Foxy Jig, and you of course know what happened. A handful of casts after putting the little jig on and working the jig around some deadfall and thick weeds...and BOOM...I get a "big hit". My Dad thought I was messing with him, until he saw my rod (which was merely a heavy "bass rod" I bought with my paper route money) bent almost in half. A few minutes later we netted a 36" musky.
Catch and release was really just starting around the time, but my grandpa was obviously old school. My Dad handed me the fish, snapped a few polaroids, and then i gave the fish back to him. My Dad put the fish back in the water, and it swam off...and my grandpa goes, "what are you guys doing?" My Dad says back, "Letting it go." And my Grandpa says, "I can't believe you did that! I wanted to mount his first musky for him!" And my Dad goes, "Well, then why the h*ll didn't you say something before I let it go?" My grandpa says, "I never would have thought you'd toss it back, so I didn't think I needed to say anything."
I'm glad my Dad let it go. He was an In-Fisherman subscriber the day he bought our cabin in WI in 1984, and really started the C&R concept (via In-fisherman) for our whole family back in 1987. |

| 37" on Mille Lacs using a Orange Hair, Gold Blade Billy Fin bucktail with single hooks. After that fish it was destroyed. I desperately wanted to find more of those lures, but never could. That day was epic, between me and my buddy we had over 40 follows, but only one hookup. I saw the fish surface and I cast right to where I saw it joking about how I was going to catch it and it unloaded on it the second it hit the water. |

Homemade SUPER UGLY multi color bucktail 34" XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Mine was a SUPER UGLY REBULT MULTI COLOR BILLY FINN bucktail, caught a bunch of muskie on it. Left it hanging in the boat one night and the next day it was gone. I only hope a Racoon didn't hook himself and run off with it. Also had a black South Bend SURF-ORENO WOOD LURE THAT CAUGHT A LOT OF FISH , that one day on the Chippewa Flowage I made a big long cast and the leader broke and it keep right on going always talk about it landing up in a Eagles nest. |
