Good question, I'm not sure. I might think that the ETec is more.?

I did happen to see an Evinrude TV commercial showing the ETec 150 actually pulling a Merc 150 4S equipped boat backwards. ?? (tug of war style)

The magic of TV.....Maybe the Merc had a 2 blade prop?

thats a good commercial. I had a 90 etec and i still think it had more torque than my current Merc 115 4S. Im not sure where you are from but there is a great deal on a 2012 etec 150 in Watertown, WI

Does anybody know the cost difference between the two and is the E-tec alot louder being a two stroke. Thanks '''''''''''''''''''''''''' I put a SUZUKI DF 140 ( 4 stroke ) on my 17'7" HYDRA-SPORT boat after I blowout my 120 HP Johnson motor. the 120 ran my HYDRA AT 51 MPH. WITH THE 140 SUZY it has a hard time runing 50mph. that being said the SUZY is a much better motor. Now if I have to replace the 140 Suzy I will replace it with a 150 E-TEC. the new E-tec's are quieter and faster then the 4 stroke Honda's ,Mercury, and Yamaha's and the E-Tec hase more than 100LBs. less weight than the 4 strocks. I have fished out other friends boat's , a 250hp E-TEC , A 170 HP. AND A 150 HP. E_TEC's all three were very quiet and fast. I like the 4 strokes but they are way to heavy for the hp they put out. I can not relate to outboards on this subject as I do not own either, but I did own a Ski-Doo snowmobile with the E-Tech technology and simply stated, it's amazing. A lot of my friends run 4 stroke sleds and with my machine I got better fuel mileage and it was well over 100 lbs lighter. This obviously being beneficial when humping those things around all day. Again, not the same category here, but I can not imagine the performance would be any different in an outboard application. Personally I would never hesitate to go with an e-tech. I will do all I can to have one on the next rig I buy.

In the 2008 Evinrude E-Tec book

It's 2013. Mercury came out with a 455-lb 150 4 stroke in 2012 that has received fantastic reviews. I haven't seen anyone other than you claim it's louder than an ETEC. Even the die-hard ETEC guys admit 4Str are quieter. For many people, that doesn't matter.

They're both great engines. Both have strengths and weaknesses. No need to make stuff up about one or the other.

........................................... Just stating what's in the 2008 Evinrude E-TEC book not making anything up . I do hope Mercury has a good selling motor as Wisconsin need's all the industry it can get. Evinrude and Mercury are both made in Wisconsin. That's a Win-WIN situation. for the state of Wisconsin.

The stats I posted are from this week, changes in the outboard industry are common these days.. Stay well, and as always...catch fish, Marv!

Living in Fond du Lac, the success of Mercury is very important to our community and the new 150 4stk has been very successful and was credited by management with helping bring new jobs to the area. I know some folks who work there, and they are very positive about it. They are very proud of the motor and how it has been performing. The word I got from an engineer when prior to it being released was that it would be most advanced four stroke in its class. In addition to wieght, it has a profile that supposed to have some advantages.

I have a 90hp Merc 4stk on my pontoon at our cottage and one of the first things people comment on when we take them for a ride is how quiet it is. I am not knocking the e-tec, just commenting on my experience.

I love mine. Am sure the etec is great, too, but the Merc 150 is a rocket.
