What are your recommendations for the best fishing line to use? What brand, what pound test etc..? Is there a better line for jerkbaits vs. buucktials etc..?

Here is what I have:

Power Pro, Power Pro, Power Pro.......

I use 80lb for my all around set ups (smaller 6-7 inch cranks, topwater), and bucktail rod. I step to 100lb for the heavier stuff. I even have 50lb on my Curado when throwing smaller Mepps and spinners.

I tried Tuff and Whiplash - did not like any of those. After trying Power Pro, I see why many people recommend this line.

Give it a try!

Thanks Tahoe, I might have to do that!

You would suggest 80lb test or heavier?

I use Tuf-Line.
65# and 80#
Tough as nails and very soft. Easy to cast. Ties great knots.

Well here you go, three people respond and you get three different suggestions.

I use Spectron and have used it for years with no problems.
I use 80# on most my rigs and 50# on my Curado for bucktails.

All three lines are good!

Well I will add a fourth. I used 80#Whiplash on all of my set ups and didn't have any problems with it. Seems like this is a question where you will get as many people liking a certain brand as there are people who can't stand a particular brand.

Tony,

So there you have it, the big 4. It becomes a matter of personal preference at this point.

I like TUF. It is the first super braid I used since switching from Dacron and I have no reason to change. I've used the regular and XP and like it a lot. Been using it for years now and never had a problem. I use 50# and 80# in the regular and 65# in the XP.

Do a search on this and other bulletin boards and you will get more info on this question than you ever wanted.

I bet if we keep this thread going, Power Pro will win! My 2 cents??????

Yes - 80 lb or heavier!
80lb on pretty much all of your stuff...100 for the 3oz and up category.

Whiplash...I cannot believe that crap is still around!

I seriously doubt most people log more hours on there equipment then I,(except guides)but 3 years running Whiplash 80# is rigged on 13 different set-ups and my opinion is the PowerPro is hard on your rods/reels in that I still have green nasty stains on my equipment, its definatly not as limp, hair bigger in diameter, gritty not smooth(but better with age)and holds water a little longer. My second is Tuf-plus but seems to hold water alot more also.Whiplash is not for the novice angler cause if you backlash you are probably cutt`in and then saying its junk cause you would be pissed at it and not yourself!I started my boy at 11 with Tuf and the wife still uses Tuf as a beginer because in my opinion its the better of 2 evils for me to deal with. It`s just like the color debate, take what everyone say`s,try it,and decide what works best for your style of fishing!Opinion`s always vary! Everyone seems to have a favorite. In reality, you can't go wrong with powerpro, whiplash (now called spiderline stealth i believe), tuff line, spiderwire or tuff line xp. The only line I would never suggest is tuff line plus. I don't know whats wrong with it, but its weak. Its all preference. Try them out and find out what your favorite is.

I used Tuf-Line XP this year in 80lb and loved it. No problems and casted like a dream. Second on my list is regular Tuf-line in 50lb.

I have been using the super braids for a long time now. I think I was one of the first in this area to ditch the Dacron and go with the new kid on the block. Started with the old flat braided Spectra "kite string" think it was Lynch Line. Then I went to Tuff line in 50 and 80 pound test. Had to buy it from Western Filament direct or from an outfit in Texas from the Bass guys because no one here in the Muskie industry had it yet. Great stuff, fished that for over ten years and then went to Power Pro because of the hype I was hearing. Fished it for a couple years now. Spooled everything back up with Tuff line and Tuff XP last year. I was tired of the line pulling into the spool so tight I couldn't get it out and Power Pro seems to have no abrasion resistance whatsoever. If you jig on the rocks and use braid it had better be Tuff XP or you will break off many jigs and some fish. I jig the stones a lot and I will tell you that some of the braids will not take it. This includes Tuff plus, Power Pro etc. I have even started to put a piece of shrink tube over my knot for protection. Somebody help me out here...is Flurocarbon the answer for me on the rocks? Need something with very little stretch to get those big hooks set. I bet this is all very confusing but you asked. Lots of opinions here, all of the super braids have their strong points and weak points. None of them are the "perfect" line. Thats why there are so many out there.[]

One word: POWER PRO!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hate Power-Pro. I bought a spool of it and threw it in the garbage after one weekend. Broke off 2 lures....something that never happened with Tuf-Line...and I couldn't stand the feel of it. Tuf-Line has a nice soft, limp feel to it while Power-pro felt like wire to me. I even took it off of a trolling reel that I spooled it on. One pass over a rocky point and the line was a frayed mass.
You guys that love Power-Pro, OK for you. For me, I tried it once and will never use it again.

PS...No soft, limp comments allowed.

For those of you using Tuf, which lb test do you prefer for bucktails and your overall set up's? What about the heavier lures?

And what about Tuf Plus? Better than Tuf? How does it cast?

I am a big Power Pro fan and Never have had a lure break off. I will try something different this year on one set up, so I am curious to hear about the above.

Thanks

65# for bucktails and small twitchers and cranks. 80# for the heavy artillery.
Been using the regular Tuf-Line for years, gonna try the XP this year on a couple of reels.
I love the castability and the knot-tying traits. The only way that I can explain it is...soft, but sensitive and strong...just like me!

Tahoe,

As for Tuf-line..I use the new XP and 80lb for jerkbaits and 50lb for the other presentations. I prefer 50 for cranking, I can cast smaller cranks and walk them thru and out of the weeds better with that line.

I have used Tuf-line plus and did not prefer it. I highly recommend the new XP stuff...[:)]

Tahoe, Basically there is no difference between Tuff plus and Power Pro. Made of the same stuff. Power Pro has a coating of some sort on it that seems to make it a little stiff for me. Last year was the first year for me with the Tuff XP. It was and is the best I have used so far. 65# on my Bucktail rods and Jig rods. Still have the regular Tuff on my Jerk bait equipment. My preference and just my opinion but it is the line I like the best.

Thanks guys. May have to give the new XP a try given the rave reviews.
Power Pro had just been so good to me, it is hard to switch...But I like to experiment!

Happy New Year to all!
