I just got a used Shimano Compre musky rod CPCM86XHL 8'6 XH. These rods have a removable handle that separates the rod from the handle for easier storage. My problem is that the rod will not separate from the handle and the rod guides are not aligned up correctly. I'v tried using 2 people to try to pull it apart but it is hopelessly stuck Any ideas?????

I looked a few of these at sportmans warehouse and it seems during shipping they get bumped around enough that the collapsible telescoping handles get jammed out easily. They had 3 and all were jammed and were misaligned so I opted to buy the single piece 7'6" models and love them. I now own 3 of them.

I have the same problem - bought it from a shop that is no longer is in business. I still have all the tags on it. Didn't think anything about it in the store, but it is most certainly stuck and not budging.

The issue you're experiencing is the main reason Shimano discontinued this series. There may be some on shelves somewhere but I think you'll have a hard time finding a dealer who can replace it for you. I'd suggest you contact Shimano customer service directly and see what they can do for you.

I was at my local Fleet Farm the other bumming around and came across these rods. There were 4 on the racks and all 4 had this same issue. I tried to lossen them to align everything so I could get a good feel for the rod, but had no luck. I asked an employee about the issue and let's just say I never did get to see what the rod would have really been like.

I bought one at a Cabela's bargain cave a couple months ago which was jammed tight and unmoveable. Two of us tried to separate it and couldn't. We both made the mistake of hammering it on the floor as you might do with a collapsable rod which only made it worse.

I negotiated the price down from the already marked down price and took a chance. ($50...well worth the risk) I called Shimano who offered to replace the rod if I couldn't get it apart. (It's not been discontinued as is noted elsewhere in this post) Long story short, I called a friend, added a bit of heat at the joint via a blow dryer, then used rubber coated gloves to get good purchase on both sides and was able to separate the two pieces without damaging the. Since then, the rod goes together/comes apart as it should---and stores beautifully in my smaller boat.

Drill a hole in the butt cap, or remove it entirely. Believe me, this is no big deal and takes about a minute or less to repair.
Using a dowel or metal rod close to the same size and the inner dia. of the butt,
simply insert the dowel into the butt until it contacts the offending, stuck, blade section.
Holding the rod vertically, tip up, and about a foot off the floor, give it a good solid hard whack against the ground. Actually, it's impossible to whack it with too much force. Just be sure the dowel you are using is not larger in dia than the inside of the blank!
I've done at least a dozen that way and it is no big deal and only takes seconds.
It's the same ferrule system used on the Trevala jigging rods we use in saltwater to catch 500 pound groupers. Been using those rods for years and they are bullet proof, other than getting stuck occasionally.
The two piece musky rods are, like most long sticks, a bit tip heavy. so, after you drill out or remove the butt cap, I suggest putting on a Balancer or adding a little weight to counter balance the tip.

I'm not drilling a hole in the butt cap of my Shimano rod. I think Shimano needs to fix this rod issue or remove them from the market.
I wonder who at Shimano, or whom recommended them to push forward with this rod design. You would of thought they would of tested these rods in different weather conditions with a few of the field reps or pro staff people first.

Shimano always had a excellent products prior to this.
Hope to see Shimano back with some nice rods in the future!

I'm not drilling a hole in my Shimano butt cap or any of them other things to correct the rod issue.
I'll sell it to someone else and tell them what wrong with the rod when sell it to them.
I"ll never buy another Shimano product.

The older model Compre Musky rods were much better. I own several of them and if it weren't for the longerroditis I suffered from last year, I'd still be using them. Bought the new 7'6" XH which developed a creaking sound so I returned it. Shopped for the 8'6" model at Cabelas, but all 3 they had were stuck together! All of the models I held were tip-heavy compared to the prior models I already owned.

Love most everything Shimano makes (reels, bike components, etc.), but they really belly-flopped on the latest musky rods.
