| WDNR 50" Size Limit Proposal Needs Support!
Mike Vogelsang and Steve Gilbert, both WDNR fisheries people are working on a proposal to raise size limits on selected lakes in Vilas and Oneida Counties to 50" for Muskellunge.
The candidate lakes are as follows:
Vilas County - Big Muskellunge, Big St. Germain, Big Sand, Crab, Kentuck, Long, Manitowish Chain, Papoose, Plum, Presque Isle Chain, Star, Trout, White Sand
Oneida County - Minocqua Chain, Rainbow Flowage, Rhinelander Flowage, Willow Flowage
The criteria used to select these waters were based on:
1. Population density - PE 1000 acres/Max Depth > 40’
4. Good growth rates/History of producing big fish - Ultimate Length > 50"
WDNR officials worked with an advisory group to work on this plan. Members of this advisory panel are:
Mike Vogelsang - DNR Headwaters Fisheries Team
Steve Gilbert - DNR Vilas County Fisheries Biologist
Joe Weiss - Guide (Spooner Area)
Adam Wiese - Conservation Congress
Steve Ostreicher - Conservation Congress
Roger Sabota - Guide (Rhinelander Area)
John Aschenbrenner - Resort Owner
Steve Heiting - Muskie Hunter Magazine
Larry Leal - Guide (Hazelhurst Area)
Steve AveLallemant - DNR Fisheries Coordinator
Ed Lamb - Resort Owner
It is their goal to get support for this change from the Natural Resources Board and get this on the Conservation Congress Ballot in April.
I believe that it's very important to get this passed. So, please take some time to contact the NRB members and let them know that you support these changes and progressive size limits in general for WI.
If you are a member of a Muskie Club here in WI, please draft a letter on behalf of your organization and send that as well.

Please do this as soon as possible! It would be good to have these in by the end of January. Anytime is good but the sooner its there the better chance of it making the ballot in April. A letter mailed in has a stronger impact than a phone call so please write letters.
Also, with the appointment of an MI member to head the DNR, the climate might be right for some change in our great state. Please help with your support.
Thank You,
Jon Olstadt

| I love reading this because I fish several of the lakes mentioned.
Any chance we can get e-addresses for the board members? I don't belong to a club, though I'd like to join one and beat Cady over the head with it, but I'd like to send my words of support to the mebers.
Thanks,
Beaver |

| Thank you jono, and for those of you wondering I think there are some very good lakes on the list. I think its a much better list then the original list I saw. I have said we have to take to everyone into consideration when a chage like this is made. I think by reducing the list and selecting the lakes they did I can see they gave it it alot more consideration. I appreciate the effort and time they put into this.
happy new year to all............Don Pfeiffer

| Guys and Gals, pleas write letters to the people listed in the original post. This is the way things get done in a democracy. A written letter means much more than an email or phone call. It shows you really care to take the time to write, address and send via snail mail. Plus the board members then have a hard copy for their files.
Please even if you don’t live in Wisconsin, if you vacation or might vacation here some day, write the letter.
A good letter from people who might choose Oneida/Vilas County as a vacation destination would be something stating why you would choose this area and how having these lakes with trophy designations would make it more likely for you to come this way on a fishing trip with the family.
Thank you all and Nail a Pig!
Mike

| It just took me 10 minutes to type and print a WORD document, address the envelopes and get them in the mail.
If I can do it, anybody can.
Type a letter of support and get it on it's way, or you won't be allowed to bitch if it doesn't happen[:0]

| I talked with Mike V. for a while on this topic at a conference the past few days and he is quite confident that this is acheivable.[] |

| tfootstalker,
Mike V is going to do his level best and its great to see him in Woodruff. I worked with Mike years ago at Escanaba lake station in Bolder Jct. I have fished muskie with him and he knows how to catch them and manage them.
Its good to see the DNR is working with the people from resort owners to guides to make possible a 50" size limit on those waters. Vilas Co. has suffered and tourism for fishing is suffering in the northwoods. A 50" size limit will drive muskie anglers there to spend dollors and we all know muskie anglers spend lots of cash.
I highly suggest you send your letters out folks. Make a simple form letter and put a stamp on it. What is $2.59 worth of stamps and 10 minutes of your time for the fishery. |
