Looks like the family is doing a trip to Clearwater in April. We'll stay on the beach, and I want to try fishing from shore/piers. We're flying down so I can only take one or two rods and a small amount of tackle. Any tips? Thanks.

Ranger, I only have two tips.

1) Bring some release tools.
2) Please do not hand feed ANYTHING!

Good luck, have fun.[;)]

Ranger I stayed on the beach acouple years ago and night fished from shore, was very productive. We caught saltwater catfish and a 2 1/5 foot hammerhead shark.

all you need to do is wade out up to your chest then cast as far as you can open your bail and walk backto the beach and wait for a bite.I bought a salt water rig down ther with like 3 hooks on it and rigged it with shrimp cost me prolly $5.00 total and was a fun time.

Ranger, the only help I can give in with your equipment. Contact the place you are staying and ship your stuff down via UPS or Fed Ex. Then pak it up in the same packaging and ship it home again. Worked great for me the last time I vacationed down there. 1st time I went I took all my stuff with me and it was quite a hassel with the tackle, rods & reels. Not a lot of room in some of those rental cars for rods etc. If I was going to fish in the surf I would make some inquires down there as to renting my equipment when I got there. Hope you have a great time and as Todd M said, remember some release tools. Lots of fish in the ocean with nasty teeth.

I stayed on the beach last summer, at a condo. I took our family out on a party boat through:
Hubbard's Marina
150 John's Pass Boardwalk
Madeira Beach, FL 33708

[email protected]
I used my muskie tackle without any problems. Just make sure that you wash off your equipment with fresh water after you are done.
There were some piers to fish on, but the party boat at $30
for a half day made more sense. Longer trips are available.
Hubbard's is just south of Clearwater.
I took my hook sharpener. Even their new hooks were terrible. The crew laughed at me until I had 5 fish on the deck before anyone else had one!
Good Luck![] [:sun:] []
I wish I was going!

Put a couple 2 piece spinning rods in a tube and you can carry them on the plane. Use reels you don't care about, because, the salt can lock them up in a day or two, even if you rinse them. Lead and hooks for cut bait or shrimp, 2 topwaters, 2 rattling suspending rapalas and a few hair jigs with plastic. That will keep you happy until you watch and talk to the natives.[:sun:]

Ranger,
Most peirs will rent equipment and sell shrimp and sandworms for bait. Also there are plenty of Party Boats to go out in the Gulf and fish off at a low price. If you do bring your own equipment and rent a car, take a inland trip to Belle Glade by Lake Okajobe(spelling). The outflow Canal from the Lake in town has some incredible big Allegator Gar,look like very big Muskies with a Swordfish snout.Hooks are hard to get into them ,but plain old yarm ball on a hook gets tangled in their teeth.Great fight! Also another possability is to talk to a skipper of a Shrimpboat docked at Tarpon Springs, north of Tampa on the Gulf. They will work all night and sleep during the day,you could get a ride out and when they go to sleep you can fish off the deck using the chum left behind from their nets.May only cost a case of BEER!Bring along big metal Sonics and steel leaders for Big Baracuda with lazor sharp teeth, they will lay under the shrimp boats for shade and waiting for a free meal. When hand lineing for Snapper etc., you will need to move the fish that last 5 feet near the surface realy fast toward the boat or you will end up with only the fishes head on your hook, they will bite it clean so fast you won't even feel the hit.
Have fun and let us know what you ended up doing.
