Hi guys, The only two blanks that I have received from ERC both had the same pattern of deep gouges down the sides which easily show up when painted over. Is this normal , and what's the best way to cover the defects of the blank before painting?

Elmers wood putty works just fine....Or you could use Kombi spot putty.

Pretty much normal. I just spray a few coats of 123 primer and lightly sand between coats. Helps enough for me to be ok with it. Bondo maybe...lol

They are called flow lines; it’s from when the plastic fills the mold.  They vary to some degree, but most hellhounds have them.  If you can’t live with them, use a rattle can heavy primer to fill them in. Sand the bait smooth to reduce the primer buildup.
