Subject: Most economical way to stay and fish LOTW?

Sorry to post so many questions so soon, but so many posters with great experience and advice.

So my son and Ii are headed back to LOTW first week of August, we will again be staying in a well known lodge on Sabaskong Bay. No complaints but the PRICE.

It's costing now $1000 per week just for the cabin. We take our own boat and food, licenses are not optional, so the biggested expense is the cabin.

We are driving 875 miles one way to LOTW, pulling my 5th wheel and boat seems like a major major haul, therefore we got the cabin.

BOTTOM LINE anybody got any other ideas other paying $1000 per week for a cabin?

PS - Did the tent last year and not really interested in tent camping, (getting too old).

I know you said no tenting it but Maybe try to figure out what you didn't like about tent camping and improving upon that? It really is the cheapest way to stay somewhere.

I am planning a trip to Big Narrows resort July 13-20. It is normally $150/person/day and that includes all meals ($1050/week per person). We have 7 guys going right now and will get a discount form that price. If you are interested shoot me a pm.

Walsh's Baystore Camp is in the NW Angle. Awesome fishing camp, one of the best in the world. They cater to fisherman, but no meal plans. $48 a night and your 7th night is free. Much less than $1000 each.

The Sabaskong area is beautiful. A buddy invited me up there to fish for a couple years and Buena Vista Resort was more than anyone could ask for. They even have a bar/restaurant. Good fishing to the east, north, and west!

Get a topper for your truck, an air mattress, a good cooler, and a small Weber grill. You can sleep in the truck, catch a few walleyes and have dinner to eat, and bring along enough food for a few hundred bucks to keep yourself fed for the week. Buy some biodegradable soap and a few towels, and you can bathe in the lake. It sounds nuts, but plenty of guys live out of their trucks on trips. Bring a case of bottled water and lots of fruit, trail mix, beef jerky, and toilet paper. If you head up at the right time of year, there's no reason at all you can't survive the week in realtive comfort. You can cook just about anything in a fire.

Some other resorts you could try in the Morson area are: Mylies Place, Buona Visat Resort, Tamarack Island Wildrness Lodge and Tolten's Miles Bay Camp. All are reasonably priced.

I recommend Tamarack Island too! It is inexpensive ($79/night for housekeeping) and the fishing is awesome.

Do not stay at Red Wing lodge. You can stay at places right near it for cheaper, get more for your money and still be able to catch big fish. I've heard good things about Mylies but I've never stayed there.

There's been a couple people on here with a grudge against Red Wing Lodge but very mysterious with no explanation. I've heard many good things about the camp and its people, and the MI chapter goes there regularly. Anyone care to elaborate?

Feel free to stop over anytime between 7am and 9pm for a nickel tour this summer if you can spare the time off the water.

We dont serve food or booze so that isnt something that would ever be a factor.

Cheers.

Kenora has several hotels that are from 80-130$ per room, per night (summer rates). The Best Western is the nicest and is on the water. The Anchor INN is decent and also on the water at around 80$ per night. Also, Perch Bay Resort is reasonable but is on the Winnipeg River. All have free docking.

If you're looking for a guide as well, I can get you a better deal at any of these places. PM me if interested.

Without a doubt I would be talking to a guide about the same deal. You take a $1,000 you may be able to get rigged up to stay somewhere and have a guide for a few days too. In fact you might work something out to not haul your boat up. If there's a cost effect way to get it done one of the guides knows it!

What about if a person was willing to tent camp? Or in in a small camper that sits in the back of a pickup? Do any of the resorts offer facilities for this? Prices? Are there good campgrounds on the water? Preferably places that have sites to pull a boat up to.

He already said he preferred not to camp, though that is far and away his biggest potential money saver. There is lots of camping available in the Sab area, Mylies, Red Wing, Buena Vista, Spruce Island, etc, etc

I guess I dont understand why your staying in a cabin if you brought a 5th wheel! do you consider sleeping in a camper (fifth wheel) tenting it? I've stayed at Red Wing before and they allow tents and fifth wheels with plug ins and all that and it wasnt that exspensive! his landing sucks and if you want to leave your boat at the dock it gets exspensive alot quicker at that point! your better off just putting in at the public landing a mile away!

Split rock lodge seems relatively cheap if splitting per person for cabin, I'm going to tammerack lodge for a week this year. Owners sounded great and location sounds good too. I've done the 600 dollar a week for cabin deal and although cheaper never found a place for that cheap that had what u wanted with hospitality, services, and help if needed. I believe u get what u pay for sometimes. Stayed at redwing lodge a couple times years back. No way someone can post under guest and just say why they don't reccommend the place? Got me curious as well since I've considered the place again.

There anual trip to Red Wing Lodge is only 325.00 per person for a week. That includes launching the boat and a bunch of other things. I don't think you have to be a member to participate.
