On the drawing board

I know I should be focusing on my orders for custom 9.5” versions, but knowing myself I guess that’s why I said they’d be done by spring lol.  Since releasing the Molly Diver and talking to people at the expo, there seems to be interest in a smaller version.  Realizing I do fish nearby lakes with shad and almost every year we have a musky take a swipe at small panfish up north, I thought I’d play around with the design a little.  I think I like the idea.  It should have multi species benefits and the kids can chuck it too.  How does it look?

My quote on the Molly Diver 9.5 : "Mike, those are some of the nicest i have seen on here. How about a 6 or 7 " in the future?" Since i saw this coming does that mean i can read peoples minds?? LOL There are alot of Ohio, Wv. and Pa. guys who don't have as many 50+ inch muskie as they do up in the WI, MN. MI. area. If we threw some of those hog sized baits you throw, we would get arrested for assault. Mike i know those new size baits will be awsome. Fish On.

Thanks, I don’t own a CNC machine, but I have associates that do.  I design my own molds for the process I use and then have them cut.  Here’s how I do it

That is great, I just ordered some rigid foam going to give it a try for a new lure design. I eventually want to get some cnc molds made. If you could recommend someone that would be great. Nice work, I really like that process. I just painted one of your choppers for a customer ill post a pic tomorrow.

There’s a guy on site here “anzomcik” who can help you I think.  There’s a guy up in Hayward that can help too, he stopped by my booth at the show but I didn’t get a card.  He took mine and is supposed to call me.  I’ll pass his info to you.

I’ve never tried, but I think if you use an aluminum filled casting epoxy to make a mold it may hold up to the foaming pressure.  You may be able to make a mold in the manner you are already familiar with.

If it will get the same side to side, when ripped, as the larger version it will be a great bait.

OK, well, it’s my next project now.  I aim to meet the same type of action as the bigger – a diver for twitching / ripping with good side to side - will do on the shallower version too.  I see this as being my “old man” lure one day- lol

I love it. 5.5" is a great size because the measurement from belly to top makes it appear both big and small at the same time depending on the angle. I'd throw that anywhere.
That program you use is awesome. I used my special program just last week to make some Threadfin Shad cranks that can be used from down South to Green Bay and even North using blugill, rockbass and perch paint jobs instead. My program consisted of Googling Threadfin Shad images, finding one that I could increase to 7" and then tracing it on parchment paper and then tracing that onto a piece of 2x2 Mahogany.
Good looking stuff Mark. If you ever need anyone to paint a few dozen let me know

They still have a lot of fine tuning to get done.  I haven’t even epoxied one yet and that opens whole other can of worms to get through.  It’s like the old saying “90% of the work takes 10% of the time, the last 10% of work takes 90% of the time”.  I need to figure out the best foaming resin weight to lead weight ratio and weight placement location on the wire form.  I’ll be messing with that all summer.  They may be released later this year and for sure next show season.  Lot’s of prototypes still to be made.

I painted up some of the proto’s.  Since the bait is only 5.75” long I figured I needed to learn how to do a bluegill pattern.  The pics show how they turned out.  Next I need to figure out a shad pattern.  I think those may be the only two patterns I’ll offer at first when I release these.  My available build time is lessening with a large outside of the house honey-do list looming.  The fishing season is approaching fast too.  So much to do and so little time…

Sent ya a FB message on the colors. Bite wise, usually late June into July (although we catch them year round trolling, but usually the deep water bite starts in mid to late June).

Thank you, most of those details are still to be determined, it’s a lure still in development.  So far I can say that when I rip them they give a very nice vibration wiggle feedback in the rod, when I slack line twitch them they kick out pretty nice.  It has good belly roll for flash.   It can hit bottom fairly quick in 4 feet of water if I try.  I tried to bust one bashing rocks at that depth and couldn’t.  I don’t consider this to be a tough bait though; it’s made from a light density foam and that’s why it has through wire construction.  In my trials I’ve made sinkers, floaters, and have now figured out how to make them with the slow rise and weighting that I like.  So far it’s the favorite bait I’ve ever made – but I always say that about my current project lol.   I hope to get some video this summer.

Mike, I just got my walleye Molly Diver today. The picture didn't do it justice.
Looks even better than I expected. Just incredible.
Can't wait to get it wet.
Thanks again.
