I am pretty new at depth finders for the bow. Am using a x 135 for it now but am looking for one that has built in gps and bigger screen. Not planning on networking anything at this point just use for the bow. was thinking hummingbird 898 or lowrance elite 7 hdi. Are these overkill for muskie guys? How much is side imaging useful vs not? Any ideas that will get the job done with out getting to high price? Also would be nice if unit worked with navionics premium canada.

I would go with the 898 as the mapping options are better.

Do you have another depthfinder in the back? If so, why not match the brands so that if you decide to network you have the option?

Bowmount thoughts:
Size matters, you'll be looking at it from a standing position so either getting it closer to you via a mount or making it bigger will reduce the squinting you have to do.

You want GPS mapping on the bow unit. It makes a world of difference for your boat control.

I commented on this on the other thread, but SI has limitations when used on the bow. It requires 2MPH-8MPH speeds to function, which is very fast for a bow mount, expecially while casting.

I'd pick a brand (Lowrance or 'Bird) and stick with it. Also make sure whatever you do get that it is network compatable. Otherwise you will have to rethink your setup later and it will cost more in the long run.

IF you go with a larger unit ..and I would... as a point of reference I have a 1158 coming on my new boat on the bow and a 998 on the console...do not skimp on the RAM mount. Get the big one or look at a Cisco Mount... either optionis needed for a 8+ sized unit...

I have a lms 332 but I am so irritated with everything on the electronics. The guy who sold me the boat mounted the 2000 puck right next to unit and unit won't take updatess that I've downloaded. Works half the time and other time doesn't for gps. Have x 135 on front. Would the lowrance elite 7 hdi be compatable to network with the lms 322c if I went that route?

From my experience with waypoints you will eventually most likely want to interface all your units together so I would match brands. then you can have the same waypoints on all your units. I run a 5" up front and wish I would have bought the 7". But if I'm not using waypoints I shut the LCD down and run an indash flasher. I think it's quieter underwater.

A quick search says it's compatible with NMEA2000 networking and as far as I know I still the red system
