I have been looking at the Diawa Lexa 300 reels. I have a friend who just baught one and it seems very solid but I was wondering if anyone has had a chance to cast big blades with them. Ex. Dbl 10's or 12's any feed back would be great.

Ive used 10's with it and it pulls them good, but with some of the plastic on the inside I don't know if it'll hold up to it. If pikemaster weighs in on this than he can give you all the answers

Not 10's. No way 12's. Works good for 8's, top water, and crankbaits. I just don't believe it would last with big blades like you are talking about. Don't get me wrong, I like mine, but I have better options for blades.

I had one for a week and sold it, at 6.3:1 it was max out with 8 blades or smaller, it would make a great topwater reel. The reel does have a plastic bushing for the pinion gear so time will tell how it holds up. Not a bad reel for the $$$ but it won't handle the big baits for long.

7.1 gears you will NOT have alot of power so baits with no pull like R/Traps will be fine, but you will have very little craking power when fighting the fish also. For top water and ripping picking up slack line is fine but the 7.1 gears will have limits.

Pikemaster you know I greatly respect your experience and knowledge that you share with us here... But we all have different opinions on our gear and Im not sure I would say this reel has "no power"... I have the one with the power handle and would say it is a deceptively powerful reel for a 7:1 ratio... No it doesn't plow in large DC10 blades, but handles 8 fine. I've thrown larger cranks like 9" big games and 10 in jakes on it and handles them with ease. Has a great drag also, which imo is more important in fighting a ski than gear ratio... Its not like trying to crank in a tuna.

That plastic bushing does make one nervous though about longevity, but for $160 or so its hard to beat for the price.

You are right everyone has his opinion, if you find a 7.1:1 gear ratio works for DCG 8 and 10 blades that's great, I guess I'm used to a Saltist or my Tranx or my 400D when it comes to DCG 10. I wonder how long the pinion gear on the 7.1:1 will hold up with Big Blades ??? I had one for a week and I did not like it and sold it, nothing wrong with the reel but I got a EXO 300 and liked that reel over the Lexa. Good luck with your 7.1:1 Lexa, you know where to send it for Detaling, Tuning and Relubing.

You can bet I will be sending it your way when it comes time...

I think you read my post wrong. I don't fish 10s on my Lexa... its obvisously not made for that with 7.1:1 gears, but it handles 8s and also decent sized cranks. I have a 401D, and also a toro winch, which are my two reels that I will use for 10s although I enjoy fishing cranks and jerkbaits much more than blades.

I used to have a Curado 300 and would say imo the lexa will fish about any lure a curado would, as far a longevity goes... I guess time will tell, reel hasn't been out that long.

i have 2 of the high speed reels and love them. ones on my glider and top water rod and the others been on my pounder rod paired with the lijewski xxxxh rod and has been pounded on with no problems and I throw a ton of big rubber and cranks. I use left handed reels so It was my only low profile reel option with 32 inch line pick up. I dont think any of the low profile reels handle dub 10s well though they wear a reel out quick..If you want a low profile for dub 10s get a toro 5:4:1. the winch is too slow
