Sad news for those of us who knew him, even if it was several years over the internet.  Steve Voigt, the originator of the M/M spinnerbait and owner of Musky Machinery baits (mmbaits.com), passed away early this morning.  I was fortunate to get to know him over the years on another musky fishing forum and he was a simply a great guy with a vast wealth of knowledge.  He made great baits and explored some now famous Ontario musky waters, particularly on Seul, with his late, great buddy, Jack Burns.

I'm really going to miss him.  We lost a good'un today.

Steve was and is still in my heart one of the greatest men Ive ever known. He knew the importance of family, friends and Muskies and would do anything within his power to make those things he cherished better. We laughed, argued and even shed a few tears together and he always left me a better person for it. God Bless you bro. My prayers with all those you loved. I'll miss seeing MM pop up on my phone. Thanks for posting Mackerel

Not many people can say they single-handedly changed Musky Fishing for the better..

Steve was one of the few who could.

He will be greatly missed.

A real loss. Steve was one of the very early advocates of catch and release. He made arguably the best spinnerbaits in the world. A pleasure to do business with and even a better friend. He will be missed a great deal and won't ever be forgotten.

I don't know but I've been told that big waters in the sky are endless. That fish have to comitt to a bite. That the wind is never more than the boat easily handles on it's own. That your mind chooses the species and that's what shows up. I also heard that Muskies start out at 50" up there, then grow. Yep I hear it's the best fishing ever dreamed of . Where the sun only sets when you want it to. Where sunrise & sunset each last over 5 hours. All that & you know Steve will find something to _ _ _ _ _ about! Steve was a friend to all fisherman and will be missed.

First time I fished MG spinnerbait got a 38 pounder in crombie bay in french river in September 1990. Had no idea what I was doing as had the bait 250 behind the boat trolling but got a nice fish which hangs on the wall. Have not kept a muskie since but back then a 38 pounder was a big fish.

Voigt, Steven Charles Born on March 29, 1951 in Fairmont, MN, the only child of Lloyd and Greta Voigt. He spent much of his childhood on a farm in Villard, MN before the family moved to San Antonio, TX for five years. They eventually settled in Winnebago, MN where Steve played football and graduated from high school. He went to college for two years at North Hennepin Community College. Marrying Patricia Sundberg on December 5, 1970, they moved to the Twin Cities area. Steve and Patty were the owners and operators of Voigt's Gas and Goods for several years, a gas station and convenience store in Robbinsdale, MN. Following their divorce in 1990, Steve returned to Southwestern Minnesota and established Homelife Waivered Services, an in-home adult care facility in Worthington, MN. Steve was an avid muskie fisherman, a master angler, and devoted his life to catch and release. Known as "H" to his fellow fishermen, he was a pioneer in the muskie fishing community, and developed several out of the box techniques which have now become commonplace. He also created handcrafted fishing lures and spinnerbaits, first as owner of M&G Tackle and most recently under his own brand "Muskie Machinery Baits". Steve was a black belt in martial arts and loved to play poker, enjoyed music and history, and loved to debate politics. Steve died peacefully on Monday, February 11, 2013 at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. Steve is survived by one daughter, Chelsey (Kyle) Foster, of Minneapolis, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Greta Voigt. He will be dearly missed by his uncle, two aunts, cousins and many dear friends. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 16, 2013, at 11:00 a.m., at the Bigelow Community Church on Maple Street in Bigelow, MN, with Rev. Ron Lammers officiating. Burial will be in the Spirit Lake Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Spirit Lake, IA, next to his mother. In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made in the memory of Steve Voigt to the Minnesota Muskie and Pike Alliance, 2076 Copland Rd., Maple Plain, MN 55359, to further the advancement of catch and release, which he was such a huge proponent of. We love you Dad. Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 16, 2013, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., at the Bigelow Community Church. Benson Funeral Home in Worthington is in charge of the arrangements.
