Fishing has been a big part of my life right next to hunting. I live lowa and the deer cover my hunting needs . I'm a avid walleye fisherman and like to fish bass and pike also. In the summer of 2004 my uncle brought me muskie fishing on Little Wolf Lake in Mn and I caught my first muskie. It was a 43 incher and ill never forget it. Here is when my problem starts! I cannot fish for anything else walleye,bass,pike anything without wishing I was fishing for muskies! I do figure 8s now fishing for any species (Only has ever worked on a brown trout). I know Iowa has muskies and it helps but its just not the same as Mn. I have made many trips up north but its still never enough. Moving to where I'd like to fish is not an option for multiple reasons. I'm really not writing this for answers, just venting. Its winter and im going nuts. I hate muskies! Is anyone in the same boat I am? Also if any of you fish pleasant creek ia and are looking for someone to fish with i have an open boat this spring.

Funny you mention brown trout on a figure eight. One of my favorite memories was a brown trout eating a 7 1/2" grandma in a figure eight after dark. Now when using small lures for trout, I always figure eight.

I never thought a fish could take over my life, until I went musky fishing. Now 6 years later and way too much time spent thinking about muskies, and not to mention the thousands of dollars spent, I wonder if I'm going crazy. Nah, I could be addicted to far worse. Enjoy the madness and make the best of every time you get out.

same problem only i grew up 3 miles from Little Wolf lake. caught my 1st muskie 42 years ago with the old man. 5 years ago moved to land of 10 lakes "Iowa" for work. fortunately near Clear Lake and muskies swim there and French lake MN an hour up the road has skies.
I am new enough to Iowa to have no idea where pleasant creek is? Vent away it is good to rant.

I booked a trip with kevin Cochran this July around the full moon. I'm sure this will increase my obsession and slight hatred for muskies. I live close to the mississippi river an often think how awesome a muskie fishery it could be.

I hear #1netman! I am in Arkansas and can only manage 2-3 trips a year. Just an hour ago, I was planning a LM canoe trip with a buddy for this a small river. Somehow I managed to turn a conversation about Arkansas Largemouth fishing into discussing my summer musky trip to MN! It's a haunting obsession! Although, another guy we were with did understand because he has caught a musky in IL a while back. One thing that is hilarious is when I show someone from down here a Double Cowgirl or a 10 inch Weagle. The looks on their faces are classic!

I too love muskie fishing and,have caught bass, walley, pike, drum and white bass on a figure eight. I do however enjoy a break fishing for other species. I usually do that when I cannot get away for a weekend or can fish a half day or something like that. Starting to enjoy fishing trout and salmon too. It is all good.

You know it's bad when you catch a 7 pound smallmouth on a Magdawg and your peeed off about it and shake the stupid $%^&*^ bass off without a picture. Saltwater fish can hold the same trance over you. As I tell me wife, "Muskies are slightly less addicting than crack". You can be addicted to worse things.

Wrong! I've had Muskie Fever for 36 years; perhaps it really will pass in about another 36 when I'll be nearing 100.

There isn't a fish in water that I dont enjoy catching. Thank God for 30 years of fishing before I discovered muskies. The only time it really bothers me is when I am fishing for something else, and the wind changes, or a front moves in, or it clouds up. Those times are tough, because I can't help but think the stupid muskies are probably going pretty good right now. But the rest of the time? Walleyes, Pike, Crappies, Bluegills, Perch... Fun to catch and good to eat. Smallmouth fishing is a blast. Catching largemouth bass is just as fun as it has ever been. If I had my choice, I'd fish for muskies, but I'm fishing either way.

No lakes close by. The mississippi would be way too complicated and probably wouldn't be successful anyhow.

Yes......it's an addiction once you catch that first one your chasing the musky, forever. I woke up in a cold sweat(no i wasn't drinking either) one morning a month ago from a horrible nightmare.........it was in regards to my wife finding the key to my Musky Den. She boxed/stored all my musky fishing gear when i wasn't home and was preparing to sell everything in a garage sale. Thank god it was only a nightmare for her's sake cause if she did.....i'd be like a Huck Finn and make myself a raft and float away shaking my head in dismay holding all my musky fishing gear tightly(lol) screaming like nancy kerrigan "Why?" "Why?" "Why?"

Your never going to shake the musky bug so don't even try bro.

----------
Or midway through the off season, you find yourself filling up the tub with your favorite lures at your side and a ice fishing rod in hand. And when the tub is full enough you start working the lure in the water. AND THEN you know it's really bad when your wife walks in, smiles at you, asks you a question and leaves, as if nothing was wrong. Even though she jsut walked into a bathroom where a grown man is mumbling to himself about musky fishng and playing with the lures he has used 1,000,000,000 times before like they were brand spankin new. All of this while sober I may add.

Or you think to yourself. "well my new suick needs to soak for a little while" "so maybe I'll just fill the tub, toss it in there and wait". But then again I could try this new crank that I just bought... hmmmmm. "hunny, will you fill up the tub please"?????

I was once an addict. Now I'm not. (lie)

Like you, I first lost control. Toward the end of what my family refers to as "Rick's muskie blackout", I came to my senses and realised I had....

* asked Rollie and Helens' daughter to marry me ("No.")
* 2 boats
* 12 fine muskie rod/reel set-ups
* 400+ muskie lures including many gifts from custom guys
* more straight wire, braided wire, flouro, snaps, swivels, replacement hooks, etc., than BPS carries
* 4,000 extra miles on my truck
* one visit to the ER to remove a big hook, and
* friends who are Republicans

"Buy the ticket, take the ride."*

* $5 to the first PM that knows who wrote that line.

Well.... Muskie fishing can be like pulling teeth for some ( painfull doing it, proud when you show the pulled tooth). I have a couple friends like that ( you know, the I could be fishin walleyes type). Thats where you seperate the men from the boys. Real men enjoy the brutal effects (and aches) of casting big baits for seemingly days on end, for that elusive "follow up". Truthfully though, Muskies are like no other fish I have chased, and I've been at it for over 30 years. It truely is a mindset, the water, the weather (from high sun to snow), the company who you share your boat with. There is nothing quite like it.......I fish with my father...... years ago he told a story. In his youthfull years, he read about the big game hunters in Africa, at the turn of the 20th century. On safari, they hunted the most elusive and dangerous beasts the bush had to offer. He equated our trips in a similar manner, we hunt, but do not kill. The prey must swim off for the hunt to be successful, thankfully we have both enjoyed the fruits of our labors.

I am from Iowa as well. The 2 biggest problems I have is: our DNR here have no intention of trying to make trophy muskie waters so the population density is so small its hard to catch them here unless you live close an can fish everyday. Problem 2 is I have been at it for 6 years now and am in over $40,000.00 on tackle and boat stuff and still have not caught my first one. I caught the addiction and have had zero success of my own. I have taken two people out that have caught their first muskies though.
