Looking for the deepest diving crank with the shortest amount of line out for trolling. I’ve got 8” Tuff Shads that get down 20’ with 78 feet of line out, also Ernie’s get down 20’ with 100 feet of line out. But I’m looking for something that gets down 30’. I was thinking of the Big Game Scuba that gets down 20’ with 65 feet of line out and 30’ with 125 feet of line out. Any help would be appreciated, thanks, Tom

I have a 12” or 14” (not sure of length anymore) Franky Bait that was hitting 36’ down with roughly 80’ of 40# monel wire out. This was on the middle setting. It has three settings. I know I was using wire, but I would think you could get down quick with braid as well. The Hooker gets down quick, but I do not remember the depth and at what length. A custom Nitro/Penetrator/Switchback from H2O Tackle also gets deep quick with minimal line.

Tough to beat that Franky though as far as depth and the least amount of line out, and have great action.

Some other options to hit 30+ft on the troll with smaller size baits:

Hydro Magnum by Yozuri - I can hit 30 ft with this bait with 90 ft of 80lb braid out. It has a clip under the lip to add weight as well...I haven't tried this yet but would imagine you could get there with less line out.

Rapala Magnum X-Rap 30- I can hit 30 ft with 125 ft of line.

Sebile LL Koolie Minnow- I can hit 30 ft with 80ft of line.

Baker Bait 5" shad- I can get this bait to about 25ft+/- with 100 ft of line.

Also, you could always try using inline weights, leadcore or down riggers. Hope this helps!

Lots of variables to consider beside just the lure, you can add some extra weight, leadcore or down riggers like Matt suggested.

I think the simplest application is wire line like Travis mentioned with about any lure though (with a coated leader to protect the fish), not too far behind is a thin diameter superline, particularly with smaller baits close to the boat.

The boat and length of rod is also part of the equation, a long rod angled straight down into the water from a low sided boat is optimum for instance. The depth of each bait will vary depending on speed and the line diameter too, obviously you'll get deeper with a 50 pound super versus a 50 pound mono... a long lead of heavy mono has a ton more water drag resistance than super.

Getting onto your question about crank baits, lots of good suggestions here! We like to refer to them as 1/4, 1/3, and 1/2 baits. The only true 1/2 muskie bait that I'm familiar with is a Plow on the deep setting (we consider the Perch bait a "1/3+ bait"). To explain the concept, if you have 60' of line out and the rod angled into the water as above, the plow will easily be down 30' (80lb superline at 4 mph).

60~30=1/2, I hope this helps Tom.

Manns makes some good baits that get deep as well and are not that expensive. I believe they have one that gets to 50'

+1 on the Plows and Hosebaits. But don't overlook Newman Lures and Bigwood Supernaturals, both of which can achieve 30' without added weight.

Like Gerry allueded to. If you angle your rod straight down into the water, you'll get the baits down faster on shorter lines as well. I tend to use an 8' rod for these baits in my spread, and get into the 16-20' range with anywhere from 35'45 feet of line out typically (depending on the bait, speed etc).

It also helps spread your lines out too when running more than 2 rods.

x2 on the 7.5 Scuba from Big Game. Hit bottom in 27' on 63' of 80#. IMHO most important factor is weather they eat it! It doesn't matter what depth it runs if they don't eat 'em! Muskies love to eat Scubas!

I'm going to second the twelve and fourteen inch metal lipped franky baits with the three line ties. You can get down thirty feet pretty darn fast even on the shallow setting, stupid fast on the deep setting. Those things carve water. And they have some size to them unlike the koolie minnows and such.
