Lake of the woods, where to start?

I was thinking of planning a fall musky trip to LOTW. I have never been there but have always wanted to fish there. My brother and I are accomplished musky fisherman. We'd prefer casting to trolling and have a 18 ft crestliner with a 90hp 4stroke. I was doing my usual pre-trip research but am a bit overwhelmed with the enormous size and numerous opportunities that exist for this historic body of water. Which area of the lake and time of the fall would anyone recommend? While we would definately like to see numbers a shot at a true trophy is also requested. I know a guide is the best way to start but do to $$ limitations might not be possible.

IMO. Back half of October for timing. You'll hear several opinions on what part of the lake, most citing either the Angle or Sabaskong. My preference is the mouth of Sabaskong and northwest of there towards Miles. Morson as a town doesn't offer much; just bring everything with you. They have several good resorts like Redwing on the mainland and then several other boat-in options. I really like Obabikon for its location. To me its ideal, head west to Miles or east into Sab. For an American plan camp, its reasonable price wise. If you really want to go cheap, check out Rex Toltons in Miles. Have fun.

Like you say, the lake is enormous and there is good-to-great muskie fishing pretty much everywhere (other than the Big Traverse, of course). Look at the lake in sections. NW Angle and Sabaskong Bay regions are probably the two areas that most would agree hold the highest densities of muskies, and there are plenty of big ones swimming around in those areas. Whitefish Bay is gin clear trout water and would be a low density area, but with opportunities for a super fish. Andrews Bay and to the west toward and around the Barrier Islands has decent numbers and plenty of big fish. Ditto for the areas around Kenora, Ptarmigan Bay and vicinity. You can hardly go wrong.

Best advice I could give is to pick an area and a timeframe and then make a commitment to it for successive years. There's too much water and too little time to do anything other than scratch the surface on your first trip, especially if you are unguided, as I always have been. But with successive trips you'll start to develop a milkrun that can become more and more productive as you better learn the nuances of the spots, and then expand on those spots.

Good luck.

Early October was much better than late October this year. You really need to wait for November to roll around for that "LATE FALL" Muskie bite. Good luck!

We fish the Sabaskong area out of Redwing Lodge.... Good numbers in August but no giants. The thing about LOW that I would highly recommend is to buy a good may and DO NOT vary from travel routes at high speed. Lot's of shallow rocks that will destroy that 90HP in a heart beat.

That being said it is probably the best musky lake on the planet for numbers.... You have to do your home work and put the time in. Very few hitters hit a home run the first time up.....

You'll be hooked, there is no place else on earth like LOW for numbers of Musky....

Location: Ontario
By mid September the pressure really drops off as most people have kids and vacations are over. The area of Big Narrows is a great place to fish even in the worst weather you can still find a protected area to fish. The numbers are good here and you have a legit chance at a big fish. or lodging if you like staying comfortable and eating like a King go to Wiley point ( www.totemresorts.com ) if you just need a cabin to sleep in and cook yourself Big Narrows is good ( sometimes they have a chef sometimes they don't ) ( www.bignarrows.com ) You can't go wrong spending the $500 on a guide they get you on the fish right away. If you don't figure 8 after every cast you will miss alot of fish. I have caught muskies from within sight of both the above mentioned lodges docks. Traveling far isn't needed but it central so if you "need" to try something you can
