Anybody use a Quantum EXO 300? Looks pretty light and seems to have a big spool capacity.

I have one that I will use for Pike fishing in Canada and small Musky baits. I got the 5.3:1 gears and from what I see after I open it up to do a Tune and Relube is I like what I see in the reel, the dual anti - reverse pawls and the size of the brass main gear. At 7.5oz I have my on a 5.5oz rod so I have a 13oz combo rod and reel !!!

I'd say the lower geared would be decent for large baits. I bought the 7.3 for topwater and burning rattletraps. Pretty happy with it, only thing I dont like is how the front is designed it's not as comfortable for how I place my hand typically on a low pro but everyones different.

CRL, makes a good point with the taking in slack on rubber. Big difference in forces working against you bouncing a big dawg vs winching in a big resistant bucktail. I'd say next reel I purchase will likely be the lower geared EXO. One other thing is also see how the powerhandle suits you. I hate the round style that comes with it and have the standard back on mine. I'm going to try to replace it with a better power handle soon that's flat.

Sure the EXO can handle big baits, but here is what will happen, someone will get one and start casting pounders or big rubber and engage the reel when the bait is in the air to turn the bait around before it hits the water and the EXO won't last long doing that. Then the same person will lock down the drag so it can't move and strip out the drive shaft, and will not fight the fish with the drag because he's got the drag lock down tight that no line can come out so now he will push down the spool release button under heavy load and bend or break the arms in the reel and say that this reel is junk. I don't understand why you want to use a 7.5oz reel for pounders or big rubber ???

Just a guess, but reel weight? I personally do not think my Tranx is "too heavy" but many are obsessed with the whole 20oz. thing.

Just a question, but are you saying that someone would engage the reel with the lure mid-flight on purpose or accident? Also, why would using a light reel be bad for throwing big rubber? Thanks.

You must not cast alot of rubber because alot of guys will stop the bait in the air to turn it around so the hooks don't tangle just before it hits the water. . LIGHT WEIGHT means the parts are LIGHT WEIGHT not heavy duty. For Mag Dawgs and Pounders I would use more of a heavy duty reel. The EXO being made of LIGHT WEIGHT material would be great for jigs or creatures or rattle traps, mepps, spinner baits, jerk baits. Just my thoughts, you can use it for whatever after you buy it.

Ahh makes sense. No I don't throw much rubber because I don't have a good rod (yet) for throwing bigger rubber. As far as stopping the bait mid air, I always have done this with my thumb on almost every bait. I don't see the reason why one wouldn't just use their thumb. If your thumb is wet, it won't burn from the line. The first cast is usually the hottest. Personally, It sounds to me like I'm destroying the reel when I engage the reel with the bait mid air.
