Been fishing muskies with a flyrod for several years. Have caught several in the 42-45" range, but want to get into that 50'' fish. Does anyone have any suggestions on a guide that would be willing to take on a flyrodder. Looking at lakes instead of rivers at this point. We have been working the rivers in WI and MN the last few years and just can't cross the 45" size. I believe any muskie is a good muskie but we are all looking for that next size bigger.
Any suggestions would be great.

I know Paul Schlagel uses a flyrod on Mille Lacs. I haven't personally been out with him, but a friend of mine has. I've been thinking about getting out with him, try my hand at it.

I've been in the exact same position.

Never fished with him myself, but I have seen Steve Scepaniak on the pond with a fly client. That was several years ago when Jonesi and I were were down at Isle and we saw Steve in there with another fly fisherman. Probably the only time in the history of Mille Lacs that there were two guys fishing that bay and both of them were on a fly rod. But ask around. I emailed and called several guides back then, explaining I was on a fly rod. Most never even replied or returned calls. Jonesi called me back same day. Told me he'd never done it himself or seen it done, but he dang sure wanted to give it a shot and do his best for me. And he did!

Steve isn't on the pond anymore, but my point is any decent guide who's willing to work with you is "enough." Their job is to put you over the fish and to just run the boat well enough to set you up for the cast. This isn't permit fishing, so with a quick explanation of how I needed the boat oriented Steve was able to make it happen. Get ahold of the guides and those that will work with you will call you back. But I feel your pain. I was stuck at a PB of 44 for a long time until I started hitting bigger water on my own...now my fly PB is 52. Big water pays off!

52 on a fly is incredible!! Esoxfly- I enjoyed your recent article in MHM as well. While I do not fly fish for muskies I frequently fly fish when I'm fishing saltwater. My dad is 100% fly fishing and he comes out musky fishing with me and I can attest to how difficult it is to get a Muskie to eat a fly.
