Been a few topics about this lately so I thought I would add my questions. Do you guys actually see clear muskie images on your units, cuz I sure dont!! They make the images look so sweet on the websites, I mean you can see individual tree limbs, weeds, rock piles, and all this cool stuff, yet I fish a couple lakes that are stocked with muskies, some 50+ inches and there has only been a small hand-full of times where it looked like it could be a muskie type shape/mark on my graph. My graph is a Humminbird 798 (if I remember correctly). I was warned about being dissapointed to an extent as to what you see on these latest and greatest units but I bought one anyway. It is a nice unit but I sure dont see them skis like I thought I would. Comments and suggestions are more than welcome!!

First off with SI you have to have your chart speed the same as the boats moving - 3mph = 3 chart speed. Google this name (Doug Vahrenberg) watch his you tube video`s. Learning new stuff with these units everyday. That picture you put up looks good btw

yes i have seen muskie and pike on my 798si im sure its not as good as the larger screen units ...but it does work ....dougs video's (as stated above) will get you started ...i was very frustrated when i started using mine ....you have to learn what the settings do ....once you figure it out it is an extremely useful tool ....also try these sites

I see your 120 for distance out. You have to think of the scale your dealing with when searching for certain things. Your SI will capture all the info like fish but your screen resolution limits how well you can see this stuff. You can go back on a larger monitor and that info will be more visible. Searching for fish on your 798 the distance out will be more 25-50' to one side.

All those nice images you seen in the catelogues look at the distance it was shot at. It all depends on what you're searching for and adjust your distance to "fit" your screen resolution. Great tool just play with it more.

As many have suggested, Doug V has good humminbird tutorials.

One thing I don't like doing is messing around for a long time with fish finder on the water to try and get the best settings. Actually, if you watch the videos Doug will tell you that there are good settings for having a perfect picture and there are different settings for finding fish. I like to record the data while I'm fishing and then I will mess around with settings when I get back.

Not sure about your model but if it has a recording feature, use it! You can record all the finder data to an SD card while you are on the water and then bring it back home and play it back. When you play it back, you can change all the settings you want to see what will improve the picture, fish finding etc.

Defintiely look at the distance on those catalogue pics, if memory serves it is under 50 feet per side.

So many options on these graphs. Learning to use it for multiple things is time consuming. I have spent hours and hours tweeking my unit to get the most out of it. Yes you have to make adjustments for certain things. Boat speed, chart speed, sensitivity, color, range, etc. I got it mostly figured out but still learning more every time I download the latest upgrades. Awesome units.

Most people don't know 25% of what they can do. I am no pro and with over 5 years of use I still don't have it completely mastered. Always learning....

One tip on the side imaging is to keep the speed of your boat down, your chart speed up and SI range about the length of a normal cast. I run one side(weedline side) at 50ft out. That way the images are great of the weedline and pockets. Turning your boat fast will cause blurred images. Make nice easy turns and you will be amazed at how good you can see underwater structure. You will learn to read weeds and structure like your standing in the bottom.

Also, you won't normally see them on your electronics unless they're not in the veg. I usually see them in the fall but not so much the rest of the year. They blend into the background pretty well.

Now when they come out with a COLOR unit things will get VERY interesting!
